Bets Of The Day: Sunday the day for O'Meara to bounce back

Saturday brought two near misses for Alan Dudman with a second and a third on the ledger, but he's hoping for better on Sunday at Pontefract with two David O'Meara runners on a good-looking card.....

"His Group penalty makes things tough, but there's an argument as the front runner here that he could be gifted the easy lead - and I do like horses that dominate at Pontefract and then find the extra kick off the turn."

15:00 Pontefract - Maraakib the pick from a very dangerous mark

David O'Meara hasn't exactly been firing in the winners recently, but the trainer had several hit the crossbar at York on Saturday to suggest that he is about to turn the corner. The likes of Mondialiste, Al Qahwa and Chatburn all ran well, so my faith is in the yard for today.

Step forward Maraakib - who hasn't won for a while and hasn't shown too much in 2017. The price reflects that at around 14.013/1, and he was well backed on the Sportsbook last night from 18/1.

With the ground good to soft at the time of writing, rain is forecast for this meeting - and Maraakib won't mind the juice at all. He won as a juvenile in heavy, and he is a better horse with the mud flying around.

Add to that his mark. He looks the best handicapped horse in the race from 78 - which is miles below his peak figure of 91.

Last term he was in much deeper races than this, so this drop in class from a good mark and ground conditions to suit, make him a bet at double figures.

15:30 Pontefract - Veteran can win the Pomfret again

All my eggs are in the David O'Meara basket for today, and the tough veteran Custom Cut looks a dangerous player in the feature Listed Pomfret Stakes.

Yes he has questions to answer following two poor runs, but we cannot be too harsh on the eight-year-old - who showed some of the old sparkle in winning a Group 3 at Leopardstown back in May. He beat the now 104-rated filly Raymonda on that occasion; and he was giving her 3lb.

His Group penalty makes things tough, but there's an argument as the front runner here that he could be gifted the easy lead - and I do like horses that dominate at Pontefract and then find the extra kick off the turn. Kirby style.

Custom Cut won this race in 2014, and we must applaud his longevity considering he has raced 32 times in Group company.

If the rain arrives it shouldn't be a problem as he possesses lots of form in soft and heavy conditions, and he's always looked the type that would get 1m2f, but sticks to 1m.

It's a bit of a mixed bag of a race, with overnight money for Gabrial - who is hugely likeable but doesn't win often. Tashweeq has the big run from the Hunt Cup - but this is a totally different contest.
