Martyn Meade's Cartographer has been really progressive this term - and she can get back on track in this 7f fillies' handicap after disappointing last time out.
With the rain forecast for Saturday at Newmarket, soft conditions should not be a problem for this three-year-old. She seemed to relish the worst of the ground winning at Newmarket earlier in the season. She made the running on that occasion and travelled strongly, but I also liked the way she picked up inside the final furlong meeting the rising terrain. That suggested to me she will have no problems with this afternoon's extra yardage.
She's unexposed with two wins from four turf starts, and her only bad run to date was last time out at 'Headquarters'. For whatever reason she didn't get involved in the race - albeit a very hot handicap.
From a mark of 92 she could still be better than that rating as she travels so well - especially if the rain arrives. There is also the possibility of an easy lead if Breakable opts to track the pace - and I do like front runners at this course.
There are plenty of runners in the closing handicap on the card, but I am not sure there is much depth. It's an obvious call to side with the three-year-olds here; and Ed Walker's Dark Pearl looks a fair enough price at 6/1 on the Sportsbook.
He goes handicapping from a mark of 81, and looks tailor-made for a proper galloping test. Indeed, if the rain arrives at the track come race time, this horse will enjoy a wet surface. The more the better.
Dark Pearl ran in Dubai Thunder's maiden at Newbury and shaped with loads of ability. He subsequently bumped into John Gosden's Zenon in a Chepstow race over 1m4f. That was on soft, and the winner has since won a staying handicap over 1m6f from a mark of 87.
He had a nice spin to win a weak race easily when last seen, but the two previous runs make more appeal - especially in relation to his handicap mark.
His jockey Liam Keniry described him as having a bit of class and a strong galloper with a relaxed manner. Today's trip in the ground should suit his style - and he looks a useful prospect. The yard's horses are going fairly well too.
