Bets Of The Day: Bastiman can do it again with well handicapped Clergyman

Wolverhampton race on Friday night
Alan Dudman has two selections for Friday's all-weather meetings at Lingfield and Wolverhampton

Alan Dudman collected four winners from his last stint, with two at double-figure prices. He starts his seven days on Bets Of The Day with two picks for Friday's action on the all-weather...

"The selection tends to see out his races quite well and does stay on, and a switch back to Wolverhampton after a couple of disappointing efforts on the Fibresand might just spark him into life."

Back Clergyman @ 10.09/1 in the 17:45 at Wolverhampton

New Hedger purchase to make his mark

15:50 Lingfield - Back Silent Echo @ 12.011/1

This is the race of the day at Lingfield, and for an ultra-competitive 0-90 it looks wide open. It was no surprise the Sportsbook were 4/1 the field last night.

I am really interested in Peter Hedger's Silent Echo here, and he certainly does it for me in terms of price. Back him at around 11.010/1.

At first glance, it looked fairly surprising he left Roger Charlton at the end of 2017 considering his decent handicap form at top tracks - he was progressive. However as a gelding, he was probably deemed surplus to requirements and was sold for not an inconsiderable amount at 120,000 guineas last November.

This will be his debut run for Hedger, and first start for 140 days. I am not put off by that at all as he has won fresh in the past, and the yard's few runners of late have been knocking on the door - including Continuum, who ran a blinder at Kempton on Wednesday at 100/1.

Silent Echo has a proper Juddmonte pedigree and landed his maiden at the track last year in nice style, showing an ability to quicken up sharply. That quality will stand him in good stead from a low draw, and he retains the hood for today.

Bastiman to hit the target again at Wolves

17:45 Wolverhampton - Back Clergyman @ 12.011/1

During my last tipping stint in the chair, trainer Rebecca Bestiman done me a massive favour thanks to Harbour Patrol's win at 20.019/1 for the column, and I am hoping she can do the same again with Clergyman at 10.09/1.

This is not a great race, and there is no point dressing it up - but never let that put you off in backing a big price for these low grade apprentice contests.

Clergyman is the top weight, and that's an angle I like down in grade. Indeed, he is so well handicapped from a mark of just 50 that I cannot let him go.

Once rated 80, he is nowhere near that level these days after a lengthy spell on the sidelines, but he at least showed something last April at Catterick in a better race than today's. He was a little unlucky in that contest too, as he came from too far back.

The selection tends to see out his races quite well and does stay on, and a switch back to Wolverhampton after a couple of disappointing efforts on the Fibresand might just spark him into life.
