Bets Of The Day: Simcock's Sardonicus ready to strike at Wolverhampton

Alan Dudman takes over from Alan Thompson's excellent week of tipping, and he is hoping to get off to a good start on Friday with two bets for the day's action at Southwell and Wolverhampton...

"Dr Sardonicus may be six years of age, but he really improved from four to five, and considering he raced over 7f to 1m in his younger days, he is still looking progressive as a sprinter."

13:35 Southwell - Back Casterbridge @ 3/1

The day's action at Ascot is the best in terms of quality by some way - but small fields there are not ideal. I was tempted to put up Darebin in the 13:20 because of the soft ground, but instead I am going for the in-form sprinter Casterbridge.

It looks a fairly obvious one here backing a horse who is bidding for the hat-trick, but he is quite lightly-raced on the all-weather with two victories from just five starts.

His recent two wins were both at Newcastle, and both achieved with his front-running way and finding for pressure at the end. That style could really suit Southwell, and he has experience of the track from last year in a sprint he wasn't beaten too far in - but he travelled very well.

Eric Alston's five-year-old scored off a mark of 71 last time and is now up to 77, but that's still a touch lower than a year ago at 80, so there can be a bit of further wriggle-room from his rating.

I've had my eyes on one of his rivals here in Bosham for a while - who is very well handicapped, and he'll be a big price. However, Casterbridge took to this surface well on his sole start here, and he should enjoy it again.

19:15 Wolverhampton - Back Dr Sardonicus @ 5/1

The race of the evening at Dunstall Park is this 0-105 sprint handicap, and the return of Dr Sardonicus is something I am looking forward to.

He runs for David Simcock, and there is no hotter handler at the moment with seven winners from 14 runners at a strike-rate of 44% in the last two weeks (at the time of writing). And as regular readers know - I do like a yard in-form.

Dr Sardonicus may be six years of age, but he really improved from four to five, and considering he raced over 7f to 1m in his younger days, he is still looking progressive as a sprinter.

Indeed, he produced a personal best when winning last time at Chelmsford - sitting handy to win a very good handicap from a mark of 99. There were plenty of 100-plus horses in behind, and he looks capable of landing an even bigger pot.

Now off a 6lb higher mark, he could be targeted at some decent all-weather races this winter. The fact he has been off since August with only five runs in 2017 suggests a lucrative campaign for this sprinter, starting with tonight with a decent draw to boot.
