A blank for Alan Dudman yesterday, although Captain Bob's second at Southwell was a painful defeat at 1.162/13 in-running. Today's bets are focused on the evening card at Leicester...
"The four-year-old had a spin last time at Yarmouth - finishing third behind Mohatem. The winner that day travelled strongly and might turn out to be a half-decent horse, whilst Wapping was given too much to do coming from behind."
18:30 Leicester - Catch Dascombe filly over suitable trip
The step up in trip should play to the strengths of Tom Dascombe's Kachess in this 6f handicap - and she is crying out for the extra yardage judged on her effort at Redcar last time.
She was bumped in a rough race, and everything just happened a bit too quickly for her over the minimum trip. That wasn't a bad contest, as the winner Carlton Frankie is potentially quite a nice type - and that horse has subsequently scored in a better race at Nottingham from a mark of 82. The second has also won since, so it's a race that could be further boosted today.
Kachess bolted up on her debut at Goodwood last term in a Novice event, but struggled afterwards when she was pitched in deep against the likes of Lady Aurelia and Fair Eva in the Queen Mary and the Princess Margaret.
Her two latest assignments have been more realistic, and she's down to a mark of 76 - which is attainable after showing ability as a juvenile. The ground shouldn't be a worry, but the biggest factor is a step up to 6f - especially at a track like Leicester.
19:00 Leicester - Quick ground to suit Wapping
The lightly-raced Wapping hasn't quite lived up to the name of his dam Exciting Times just yet, but he will have his ideal conditions on Tuesday at Leicester - 1m2f on quick ground.
He also has race fitness on his side, as three of the six in the field are running for the first time this season.
The four-year-old had a spin last time at Yarmouth - finishing third behind Mohatem. The winner that day travelled strongly and might turn out to be a half-decent horse, whilst Wapping was given too much to do coming from behind - and that happened last term at Lingfield too.
Trainer David Lanigan goes for the blinkers today, and he looks well handicapped considering he cruised through a race at Newbury last term. He was matched at 1.162/13 in running on that occasion and travelled as if he was going to win. However, that confirms he might be a better horse than 84.
