Bets Of The Day: Macho could be too strong for rivals on the sand

Will Hughie Morrison's Macho Mac be number one on Tuesday?

Cadeau Magnifique didn't quite live up to his name yesterday when finishing second, but Alan Dudman is hoping to go one better on the all-weather with an unexposed handicapper at Southwell...

"Switching to the Fibresand is a plus, as his relation Equitania scored on the surface, and from a mark of 59, he could be a player if he learns to settle - but he does travel quite well and he could improve."

13:20 Catterick - Vintage to come good over fences

With 12 career starts and seven runner-up positions, you would be right to think that freshman chaser Vintage Clouds could be a frustrating customer.

He hasn't done an awful lot wrong in his two steeple chasing efforts this season - and he's probably bumped into a couple as well. So today, there are absolutely no excuses - and this is a decent race for the track.

There was no shame in finishing second behind Paul Nicholls' classy Politilogue last time at Haydock, and his previous effort came against Briery Belle - who has since hacked up at Warwick by a decent margin.

Vintage Clouds probably lacked the pace to deal with those two over shorter trips, so it's a positive he steps up in distance today. This should be more suitable given he finished second in the Grade 2 Prestige Novices' Hurdle.

15:00 Southwell - It's gotta be so Macho

The 7f 0-65 handicap doesn't have an awful lot going for it, and with the field consisting of plenty of older and out of form horses, there could be a bit of potential in Macho Mac.

He caught the eye with his first outing on the all-weather recently at Wolverhampton. He raced over 6f and attracted a bit of market support. However, he pulled and went off too hard, and ruined any sort of chance of winning.

Unfortunately, the pulling seems to be a common theme with this 3yo, as he proved far too fresh despite travelling ever so well in soft ground at Redcar in October - and he moved better than a mid-60s horse.

Switching to the Fibresand is a plus, as his relation Equitania scored on the surface, and from a mark of 59, he could be a player if he learns to settle - but he does travel quite well and he could improve.
