Bets of the Day: Red Alert to lead them all the way at Salisbury

Jospehine Gordon will be on Red Alert for a good start

Alan got off the mark yesterday with a winner at Brighton, and today he has identified a couple of front runners that could be difficult to pass at Salisbury and Lingfield...

"He is a front running type who might take some catching if he can establish an early lead over the minimum trip."

Back Red Alert @ 11/2 in the 15:30 Salisbury

15:30 Salisbury - Back Red Alert @ 11/2

A competitive looking field has been entered in this five furlong sprint for three-year-olds and although there have only been three renewals, the race is yet to have its first winning favourite, and with not one course winner in the field this looks like a pretty good opportunity for Joseph Tuite's Red Alert to run well today. With just the one win from eight starts, a maiden at Chelmsford over six furlongs, he is a front running type who might take some catching if he can establish an early lead over the minimum trip. He also has course form when he ran in the same Salisbury race as Foxcatcher when finishing fifth. He had been off the course for 84 days before that run and he will be fitter for it today.

Secret Agent is the current market leader, who ran well on his return when second at Bath behind Jashma and he looks more than capable of turning that form around as he faces him on 7lb better terms for a two length defeat. He is an obvious danger to the selection but today I think is Red Alerts day and with Josephine Gordon in the saddle he has a more than capable pilot to get him out early and see if they can catch him.

19:20 Lingfield - Back Akavit @ 2/1

Another potential front runner that I think could go well today is Ed de Giles' five-year-old Akavit who won three starts ago at Chepstow over this distance and he has run two solid races since over the same trip off higher marks and finished just over length second of this same mark at Ripon last time out. Conditions today will suit and with Silvestre de Sousa in the plate there is no reason why he shouldn't go well again.

The danger horse could well be Alan King's McCools Gold who got back on track for this yard when second at Nottingham over this trip three weeks ago, keeping on well behind what appeared to be a very well handicapped horse. He is only 1lb higher today and with just nine career starts he could still be open to improvement. It's certainly not a two horse race but these two stand out for me and I think Akavit is the one to be with today.
