Big odds for Tudhope's Ghalib worth taking
16:10 Carlisle - Back Ghalib each-way @ 20/1 Sportsbook price
The forecast didn't materialise at Ripon with our Dark Defender bet on Tuesday, and he was a non runner. However, I am hoping we get a bit of luck with the rain for Thursday, as Ghalib is an interesting pick at a big price. But there's a case of caveat emptor with him, as I do believe he is best with a bit of juice in the ground.
He was chalked up at 20/1 on the Sportsbook last night, and hopefully we can get all the field standing their ground for the three places - unlike Kempton yesterday with Kitaabaat running on for third at big odds. Unfortunately one came out for just the seven runners. It's been that sort of week for frustration.
We press on with our first selection, and Ghalib (picture below with the lead) has got plenty of form around Hamilton and seems to enjoy the stiff finish there. That should stand him in good stead for the drop back down in distance at this track.
In fact, he won at the Scottish venue earlier this summer from a rating of 77, and he's back down to that mark after two poor runs since. He is used to running in a slightly better class and I do like the angle of taking a drop in grade with top weight.
He races handy and Danny Tudhope is booked. He looks overpriced to me.
Jardine to fire in another winner this week
16:45 Carlisle - Back Equidae @ 4.67/2
Iain Jardine's Equidae looks a fairly solid 4.67/2 chance in the penultimate race on the Carlisle card, and this looks a good opportunity for the horse to get his head in front for the first time on the turf.
Last time out he was given an aggressive front-running ride in heavy ground at Ayr. He finished third and the gallop set wasn't perhaps the wisest given the stamina-sapping conditions.
Prior to that he ran well from the front again at Ayr, and that was a stronger grade than what he'll be racing in this afternoon.
His mark of 65 is well within his winning range, and Jardine's horses are in good nick with the trainer recording a double on Tuesday at Ripon.
