Bets Of The Day: May the force be with Luke's mount at Chelmsford

Alan Dudman had a non-runner and a winner yesterday - as Franco's Secret earned the place bet at Kempton. He's looking to keep the week in profit with his final two selections at Chelmsford...

"This is most certainly a winnable race, as plenty in here are out of form. Trainer John Quinn had a couple of runners over the jumps at Catterick this week that ran really well, and Catastrophe is most certainly a player from this handicap mark."

18:25 Chelmsford - Be sensible with Captain bet

Trainer Derek Shaw has only sent out 11 runners in December, but he saddled a winner at Newcastle earlier this week - and his horses have been running OK. He trains Captain Lars, who was slightly unlucky when last seen, and he'll be the bet at 7.06/1 for this 6f handicap.

With just two victories on the all-weather, he isn't an obvious one, but he's had a chequered, if not varied career. He started out with Mike De Kock in South Africa - and then had a pair of spins in Meydan. And not many in this line-up can boast of having been ridden by Christophe Soumillon.

These days, Captain Lars is reinventing himself as a sprinter, and he is still unexposed over tonight's trip. The mark is most appealing at 70, considering he was rated 85 in January.

His latest effort was a bit unlucky over 5f, as he made up a lot of ground off a furious pace - only to be checked late on. Habitual front-runner Bertie Blue Boy is in the race, so a return to 6f with a strong pace should suit - and he's handicapped to go close.

19:30 Chelmsford - No Catastrophe in backing Morris

Leading all-weather jockey Luke Morris takes the ride on Catastrophe for this 0-65 handicap, and if the 3yo replicates his run from course-and-distance last time, he'll be on the scene.

That race came in the same grade, and he finished second behind Pacific Salt. His position was not ideal then, and he fared best of those to come from off the pace. He is the type that often gets shuffled back - and it's no surprise there's a 1m2f run in his ledger.

There is potential of him being chopped for speed here to back in-play.

However, the hood is coming out for the first time, and he's well-handicapped from a rather stiff juvenile mark of 75. He is now rated 61.

This is most certainly a winnable race, as plenty in here are out of form. Trainer John Quinn had a couple of runners over the jumps at Catterick this week that ran really well, and Catastrophe is most certainly a player from this handicap mark.
