Alan Dudman had a winner and a second yesterday, and now targets a tremendous card at Exeter on Sunday with two horses from the Tom George stable...
"However, Whats Happening has bags of stamina, and even won a 3m4f contest around Cheltenham. With just 13 career starts, he has a different profile for this race, and he's worth the risk at the odds."
From an in-running perspective, Tom George's Rocklander has got to be one of the most interesting horses of the day.
Last time out he was just touched off by the well-handicapped Cogry at Cheltenham, but he travelled with his usual swagger and hit 1.11/10 in-play. Losing by a narrow margin to that Nigel Twiston-Davies horse was no disgrace, and the pair were ten lengths clear. Indeed, the assessor has taken another swipe at Rocklander by raising him a further 6lb to a mark of 137.
That effort at Prestbury Park was his first try at 3m, and despite his smooth style, he has shaped like this sort of staying trip will suit. Therefore he is completely unexposed at today's distance.
He's the sort of horse I don't mind backing at 5/1 in the Sportsbook, but I would also throw in a very cheap in-running lay as a bit of insurance. He traded at 1.21/5 and was beaten into second at Exeter previously, and he now has four odds-on defeats in the run to his name.
However, he acts on soft and the yard are in good form. He's very appealing for both bets.
Another candidate from the Tom George yard gets the nod for this 3m Veterans' Chase, and Whats Happening can be backed at 8/1.
There are risks attached, well one rather huge one in fact; he's been off the track since October 2015. A lay-off of 15 months coming back into soft ground is not ideal, but he does handle this surface judged on his third in the London National at Sandown back in 2014.
But it's worth touching on his last outing (which wasn't quite in black and white). He won a decent pot at Cheltenham on good ground from a mark of 136 and beat Perfect Candidate and Fox Appeal. There's a lot to like about that form (albeit in the distance past), and Perfect Candidate is in this race from a mark of 150 and has top weight.
The selection gets to run here from just 1lb higher, so he has been given a big chance. It's offset by the absence of course.
However, What's Happening has bags of stamina, and even won a 3m4f contest around Cheltenham. With just 13 career starts, he has a different profile for this veterans' race, and he's worth the risk at the odds.
