Bets Of The Day: Dobbin's Don to be rewarded for consistency

With three National Hunt fixtures on Sunday, Alan heads to Kelso in search of a winner
With three National Hunt fixtures on Sunday, Alan heads to Kelso in search of a winner

It was a near miss for Alan Dudman yesterday with another second for headline selection Kapstadt. Kelso is the next port of call for Sunday, and Alan is hoping for a win or two with a pair of selections...

"He likes decent ground, in fact the quicker the better. He could be the one with the most stamina in the race too, and considering he is another with some Kelso form, his price is fair enough."

15:15 Kelso - Lycidas to deliver over hurdles

For a horse with plenty of ability on the Flat, Lycidas really ought to have a better record over hurdles. Winning just once from his ten spins over the jumps is a fairly meagre return considering he was more than useful on the level with a rating in the high 90s.

With that in mind, he is certainly well treated running from 122 today - his lowest ever mark over hurdles.

Lycidas wants decent ground, as one of his best performances came on a quick surface. He also is dropping down in grade here to a fairly winnable Class 3 race - much easier than the 0-140 contest finished second in at Newcastle. In fact, it's one of my angles; I do like class droppers running off top weight.

He won a novice at Kelso by 20 lengths from the front early in his hurdling career, and those tactics suit him over 2m. Last time out he raced at Ayr from off the pace - but it suited those up with the speed, and I am happy to give Lycidas another chance.

15:50 Kelso - Mister can be the Don for Dobbin

If there were awards for being consistent, surely Rose Dobbin's Mister Don would be worthy of such an accolade. His form figures recently read 232341, and he should be given a chance here to get his head in front at a price of 5/1.

Last time out represented something of a career best. He finished runner-up at Perth in the Highland National, and he saw out the longer trip of 3m7f really well. That potentially has opened up a few more options.

The handicapper has raised him 5lb to a mark of 112, but that is fair considering the front two were five lengths clear. The rating isn't too prohibitive considering he started out life as a novice hurdler rated 102.

He likes decent ground, in fact the quicker the better. He could be the one with the most stamina in the race too, and considering he is another with some Kelso form, his price is fair enough.
