Bets Of The Day: Villain can be the hero in Newcastle feature

Can Arch Villain land the feature Northumberland Plate on Saturday?
Can Arch Villain land the feature Northumberland Plate on Saturday?

A second at 1.42 in-play and a third were the sum of the parts yesterday for Bets Of The Day man Alan Dudman, who looks to the big races at Newcastle on Saturday, and kicks off with a bet at Chester...

"His career record on the all-weather reads seven victories from 12 starts, and he stays 2m really well. In fact, his staying power will give him a big chance on his surface of choice, as the horse is an out-and-out resolute galloper."

13:50 Chester - Attack with Fahey's Atteq

Trainer Richard Fahey can get the day off to a good start with the expensively purchased Atteq in the 13:50 maiden on the Roodeye.

The Malton handler had a slow-ish start with his juveniles, but he has banged in 14 two-year-old winners so far at a 15% strike-rate.

Atteq runs in the Al Shaqab colours and cost plenty. Crucially though he has a plum draw and his stablemate Megan Lily is a pretty quick horse with ability. I expect her to press on, and the selection to close from the cutaway.

Fahey has described him as laid back, and a decent show could be on the cards, as he can prove to be a cut above this lot.

14:30 Newcastle - Let's Pretend for the Chipchase

The Group 3 Chipchase revolves around the best horse on ratings in Buratino, and if he finds his feet again he'll be hard to beat, as one of the leading juveniles from last season.

I apologise for wearing the Godolphin hat again, but Pretend comes from a different angle in this race to many in this field, and at 13/2 on the Sportsbook - we have a chance to back a horse who is best on this sort of surface, and possesses a dazzling turn of foot. His career record sprinting on artificial terrain reads 118111.

His form took off in 2014/15 - culminating in success on AW Finals Day in the Sprint Championship. In fact he was a revelation. He is the type of horse who needs plenty of cover, and quick horses to take him for as long as possible, and from a decent draw I'd expect this race to pan out perfectly for him to pounce late with his one final burst of acceleration over the far side.

The obvious question mark is the absence since June 2015, but this five-year-old has a serious amount of talent not to be backed at a decent price. When William Buick rode him in the AW Final he said afterwards: "He will improve again and is a proper sprinter."

16:15 Newcastle - Arch to be no Villain in the Plate

Amanda Perrett and Jim Crowley team up with Arch Villain in the feature Northumberland Plate, and at 20/1 overnight on the Sportsbook into 14/1, he has a lot going for him. But I'm under no illusions how tough this race is.

This seven-year-old has plenty of decent form on the all-weather; including a close second to subsequent Ebor winner Litigant in 2014. His career record on the artificial reads seven victories from 12 starts, and he stays 2m really well. In fact, his staying power will give him a big chance on his surface of choice, as the horse is an out-and-out resolute galloper.

I can't get too bogged down on the draw, as it's early days at the track. But I am happy with his gate position in one as he is a handy racer.

He ran in the 2013 version of this contest on turf against Tominator, and finished a creditable eighth considering the rain softened ground went against him that day.

Blinkers will be returning, and his last outing was back in February (a victory). I have no worries about him running after a break as he has scored following an absence before.
