Bets Of The Day: Hammond's Tassie can bounce back at Catterick

Alan's two selections both finished second yesterday - at 9.86 and 17.51 Betfair SP. He's hoping for a better result on the Catterick card for Monday, with a big price pick...

"But let us deal with the positives. He has been in a much better standard of race previously, and today marks a drop in class. He was stuffed out of sight in the Rowland Meyrick last time out, but he has form in 0-140 company - where as I Just Know has been scoring in 0-120."

15:40 Catterick - Never give up on Never Up

Trainer Sue Smith inherited Never Up from George Moore in 2016, and in three runs last spring his best achievement for the new yard was a third in a Southwell handicap chase.

Today the 6yo switches back over hurdles, and looks to be on a workable mark at 107, more so on his Flat rating than his chase form, and it's time for this horse to start delivering on his early promise for Moore.

His keen going nature has been a problem in the past, he didn't see out his race from his final appearance in June behind Somchine - and he was beaten nearly 11 lengths that day.

A sharper course could suit him, and whilst his best two novice performances came on good and good to soft ground, he has plenty of knee action to help him get into the muddy conditions.

Potential for pace in the race could also be handy, as in-form Snowed In can press on, whilst Mr Selby is also likely to be up there. Although I don't mind jockey Danny Cook cracking on from the front with these Smith horses.

Never Up is running from a break of 238 days so he might need it. However, he ran a cracker when returning fresh in May 2015 - and he is worth the risk at around 8.07/1.

16:10 Catterick - Silver to take the Gold in Yorkshire

The obvious pick here is I Just Know - who is progressing well this term and has shot up the ratings 20lb with two wide margin victories by a combined total of 16 lengths. He goes from the front, stays, and loves soft ground. The only thing not to like is the price at 7/4.

Then I looked at the 12/1 on Silver Tassie.

Trained by Micky Hammond, he's never won for the yard, nor won a handicap. His record over fences reads one victory from 17, and that came in 2014.

But let us deal with the positives. He has been in a much better standard of race previously, and today marks a drop in class. He was stuffed out of sight in the Rowland Meyrick last time out, but he has form in 0-140 company - where as I Just Know has been scoring in 0-120.

And whilst he isn't consistent, he is capable of running well on his day, especially from this mark of 127. He stays and acts in the ground, plus he'll have a target to aim for with the favourite's run style.
