Bets of the Day: Column looks well placed to run a big race

James Fanshaw can improve his Newmarket strike rate with Column
James Fanshaw can improve his Newmarket strike rate with Column

Alan Thompson is back in the tipping chair starting today and he is kicking off with two runners from Newmarket, that he also thinks are worth a little each-way double...

14:40 Newmarket - Column @ 11/2 Sportsbook

James Fanshawe's yard are in good form with four winners from 17 runners over the last two weeks. I think Column could add to that stat with a handy weight for age allowance in this class three handicap and will get the fast ground he craves.

Last season he looked like he needed his opening race before bolting up by eight lengths in his next (on good to firm ground). While that maiden win at Beverley last season wasn't the best race, he was an impressive winner. He will have to improve on all known form to take this, but at the prices and with fast ground, I think he is worth taking a chance with.

Just as he did as a juvenile, he lost this seasons opener by three lengths, after being sent off market favourite. However, he has been gelded since that race so not only should that naturally improve him but he should strip fitter for the run. His usual partner Frederik Tylicki is on board, who has a 23% strike rate when riding three-year-olds for James Fanshawe.

15:10 Newmarket - Aristocratic @ 3/1 Sportsbook

Don't worry about the fact that Aristocratic is a maiden or the fact that she has to run from outside the handicap in this contest, with an official rating of 79. She has been placed in all four of her starts and run into what appear to be some very good horses. None more so than her last run where she finished just a length and a half behind subsequent Sandringham winner and potential group one performer in the making Persuasive, who won at Ascot off a mark of 95 and is now rated 104. Aristocratic could be thrown in here running off 81 even though that is 2lb higher than her official rating.

Ryan Moore is her normal companion and has been on board on all her previous starts but today Joe Fanning gets the leg up, I assume because he can make the lightweight 8-2 required. Fanning, isn't exactly a regular rider for Sir Michael Stoute but when riding three-year-olds and upwards for him, he hasn't done a bad job, riding four winners from nine mounts over the last five years.
