Alan returns for Saturday's action and looks at one of the big races at Ascot for his best bet...
"I thought he shaped very well in the Summer Cup at Market Rasen in July, a race where the lack of a run might just have found him out. He ran well for a long way, though."
Curtis chaser can be the champ
The ground looks as though it will be riding good for Saturday at Ascot - and that doesn't put me off backing Geordie Des Champs at an attractive price. There was support for him on the Sportsbook yesterday from 8/1.
He's still low mileage over fences with just a handful of starts, and he was a fairly useful hurdler. In 2017 he finished third in the big Grade 3 handicap at Aintree. He was placed from a mark of 135 over the smaller ones in that. Today he runs from 138 over fences.
I thought he shaped very well in the Summer Cup at Market Rasen in July, a race where the lack of a run might just have found him out. He ran well for a long way, though.
Good ground and a proper test at 3m on Saturday will hopefully see him in a better light under Barry Geraghty.
Step up in trip to help Destiny
I've got previous with Grey Destiny - I backed him a couple of times at Wolverhampton earlier in the year only to see him missing the break and running on late - but I am prepared to give him another chance. Although I am expecting his party trick at the gates of giving everything a head-start.
With that in mind, I am keeping positive with the step up in trip to 1m. It might be able to give him a bit more time to get going - especially with such a stiff finish.
He stayed on well in a 0-70 in September, and he is well up to this sort of level. In truth, it's not a great race and he can travel pretty well on his day.
From a mark of 61, he attracted a few nibbles on the Sportsbook too last night. He most definitely is in last chance saloon with me.
