Bets Of The Day: Effect to take honours in less than magical contest

Trainer Charlie Appleby will be aiming for another winner at Lingfield with Magical Effect
Trainer Charlie Appleby will be aiming for another winner at Lingfield with Magical Effect

A clean sweep of victories yesterday for the column - with two winners and an in-running trade that was beaten at 1.01. Alan Dudman now has a running total profit of 19.10 points, and is looking to boost that at York and Lingfield for his final day in the chair...

"He didn't back it up when last seen in January - with a horrible display of tardiness and was turned over at odds of 1/4, but he has been given plenty of time off the track since."

Back Magical Effect @ 2.206/5 in the 18:00 at Lingfield

14:30 York - Back Ashadihan

What price will Lumiere be sent off at? She was 13/8 overnight on the Sportsbook, and she's the horse with a massive reputation. Quite right too, not many thump rivals at Newmarket first time up by six lengths.

However, the 6/1 price on Ashadihan overlooks established form. Having coasted to victory on debut by three lengths at Haydock, she ran an absolute stormer at Royal Ascot in the Group 3 Albany. Of course; Lumiere could blitz them, but Kevin Ryan's runner is a huge filly with so much more to come.

Times suggested good ground with a hint of cut yesterday, which I think will be perfect for the selection.

Ryan clearly thinks the world of her, and said after her debut success how brilliant she is in her homework and how laid back the filly is. If that price is your thing for each-way bets, she fits the bill.

15:30 Stratford - Back-to-lay Macarthur

It's hard to think that Macarthur ran at York, this time in 2007. I had more hair then, and Macarthur had more ability. He was third in the Voltigeur that day, now he runs as an 11-year-old at Stratford - which is the beauty of this marvellous game.

Make no mistake, the horse is an old monkey, and who would have thought he would pop up in any tipping piece?

He'll be a potential 16.015/1 to 21.020/1 shot in the race, and he's the type to be held up that usually trades shorter than his BSP.

Quick ground suits, and he'll give you the chance to gain a green book to work as a profit on the other horses.

Trading favourite Great Expectations also goes in the 17:30 at Lingfield.

18:00 Lingfield - Magical Effect

This won't take much explaining, although in a way I would prefer the AW course at Lingfield.

Anyway, Godolphin's Magical Effect really should win this. The maiden isn't particularly strong, with the exposed rivals running to ratings of 70 to 73 - so it's not exactly a tough race.

The three-year-old was 'all over the shop' on his debut, but displayed a lot of talent in finishing second. He didn't back it up when last seen in January - with a horrible display of tardiness and was turned over at odds of 1/4, but he has been given plenty of time off the track since.

If he is 2.01/1 I would take it, I would price him up on natural ability and improvement as around 1.758/11 or shorter. So he is a bet.

I just hope this son of New Approach behaves himself - which can be a trait of his offspring.
