Welcome to Betfair's Grand National 2018 Guide
On Saturday 14 April a maximum of 40 runners will line up at Aintree Racecourse to tackle one of National Hunt's toughest races. Run over a trip just shy of four and a half miles, with 30 fences to be jumped, the nation's favourite betting race isn't for the faint-hearted. The winner will need to jump well, will need a bit of luck in running, and will require some ice cool nerves from its jockey.
Who that horse will be is the big puzzle we'll all be trying to solve from now until 5:15pm on Saturday afternoon, but following these pointers could go a long way to finding the answer.
- Only once in the last 22 years has the race been won by a horse over the age of 11.
- After going 12 years without a win, eight-year-old's have won two of the last three.
- Seven of the last 10 winners were racing over the National fences for the first time
- All of the last 10 winners had raced in at least 10 Chase races prior to winning the Grand National - this rules out favourite Total Recall.
- After winning five of eight renewals between 1999 to 2006, single-word horse names have won just one (Ballabriggs) of the last 11 renewals.
- The last seven winners have been priced 25/1 (twice), 33/1 (twice), 14/1 (twice) and 66/1. No favourite has won for eight years.
