Irish Greyhound Derby 2015: All the best bets from the third round
The Irish Greyhound Derby reaches the third round stage at Shelbourne Park tonight with eight heats. The first three qualify for next week's quarter finals and, as ever, The Lord is across it all...
"The final heat of the night sees the fastest starters go head to head. Amazing Dude (22:27) could set a furious gallop up front and any crowding in behind helps him, although Ballybough Mike could match him all the way. Might Priceless Lassie spike their guns late?"
Heat one can go to the red jacket of Ballyhooly Henry (20:42), although only if he traps well and holds the inside line. Indeed setting a furious pace up front is key given the powerhouse performers behind, including last year's finalist Vulturi and young pretender and improving Jaytee Jet.
Heat two sees Save The Don (20:57) look to strike. He has better early pace than has been obvious in the first two rounds and could break better third time up and show his class having reached the Derby final at Scotland. However, his A-game is required with powerful Paradise Maverik behind.
Oaks champion Ballydoyle Honey (21:12) is very much the queen of the track in Ireland and might break better from this wider draw. She is well known for her big-finishing performances and she might have too much late on for the likes of Sidarian Vega, the Champion Stakes winner.
Favourite after two rounds of the Derby is Ballymac Matt (21:27). He gets his favourite draw against the fence in heat four and an easy victory is again on the cards with a big edge on the clock, while another high-profile dog Farloe Blitz (21:42) goes in heat five.
He made the Wimbledon final and boasts a cracking burst of early pace and sets the tempo here. That said, this is an alien draw for the unbeaten dog, although a smash break seals it. Cable Bay and Gaytime Hawk will chase him home.
Onto heat six now where Peregrine Falcon (21:57) is bang-in-form. He's won his last five starts and is tough to oppose if breaking in front, while Blue Cafu (22:12) will be all the rage in heat seven. He has pace at both ends and might soon be in charge.
