Wimbledon hosts the Greyhound Derby final this evening and Timeform's Joe Nordoff gives his three selections including a value punt in the Derby Plate Final.
"The big one comes at 21.08, and as ever is a compelling conundrum with the blend of amazing stories behind the 6 finalists epitomising what is great about this competition."
FIZZYPOP BUDDY (Trap 5, 19.43) had little go his way behind Spa Road Piper here on his latest start, but typically kept on in gritty fashion to grab second. The son of Tubbertelly Dubh is expected to be seen to much better effect here (particularly with 4 railers on his inside) and last year's St Leger hero can return to winning ways. Borna Mindy (Trap 1) is generally seen plying her trade at Sheffield/Nottingham and may well pose the chief threat, particularly if breaking well, for all she lacks a look round.
It is safe to say connections of Clondoty Alex were probably pleased with how the draw worked out ahead of the Derby Plate Final at 20.51, and he holds sound claims of gaining some degree of compensation for the most unfortunate incident that saw him eliminated from the Derby, and he is solid at 2/1 at the head of the market. However, I can't help but feel there is some value in the shape of CHARITY BUSTER (Trap 3). John Lambe's charge was eliminated behind the above in the Derby itself but had previously created a favourable impression when accounting for none other than Lenson Rocky. The son of Godsend wasn't seen to anything like best effect behind the re-opposing King Alley last week, and with his strike-rate (9-15) another very appealing stat, odds as big 12/1 seemingly underestimate the Perry Barr raider. Of course he will need to trap clever with Lenson Santi inside, but odds so tempting make him worth chancing.
The big one comes at 21.08, and as ever is a compelling conundrum with the blend of amazing stories behind the 6 finalists epitomising what is great about this competition. JAYTEE JET (Trap 6) has now long since been the sole wide seed and it is he who gets the vote to provide Paul Hennessy with Greyhound racing's greatest prize. The son of Droopys Scolari (TF Rated 125) looks ideally berthed, and a decent exit from the boxes should see him out of trouble on the wide outside. Droopys Roddick (Trap 3) impressed with his semi-final success (crucially broke better) and he's a big player with a fast break, but he may have one or two obstacles to overcome on the run-up.
