If it's Friday, it must be Romford and RPGTV viewers are in for a treat with a dozen Open races to get stuck into. Darrell Williams pinpoints the bets you should be having...
"The layers have certainly not under-estimated Paul Hebbs Vinegarhill Ruby and rightly so with the bitch strongly fancied to claim the 575m contest at 22:01"
Sword Of Gold could hardly have won any easier when clocking the only sub 24 sec run in the heats of a 400m Maiden competition last week and Phil Simmonds recruit can take the in-form local handler a step closer to his century of OR winners for the season in tonight's final (21:09). A reproduction of his 370 split would guarantee him the lead and with Shaneboy Santana set to edge in from the adjacent box, the selection should enjoy plenty of racing room down the outside and rates one of the night's better bets at around 2.89/5.
The Maiden Stayers final (20:53) is slightly less straight-forward but I still fancy Droopys Dresden to clear Kereight Buster which should be the key to him securing victory. Maxine Locke's runner in his favoured trap one box has shown better speed over the 575m trip than he did over four bends but I still expect the selection to have superior pace going into the corner. Perhaps a bigger concern might be Underground Bute who appears to have been under-valued by the layers. Just back on the track after a six-month absence he stayed on menacingly in his heat and is worth including at around 11.010/1.
The layers have certainly not under-estimated Paul Hebbs Vinegarhill Ruby and rightly so with the bitch strongly fancied to claim the 575m contest at 22:01. Set to lead-up Glamorous Sharif, whose slow starts have become a habit of late, her own consistency, particularly when clad in stripes, has been one of her star features and with a 3532 on the card from late August she will be hard to hold.
Kilmore Lemon's consistency at the boxes has helped the Feb '16 youngster progress quickly over the 400m - he was a semi-finalist in the recent Romford Puppy Cup - and looks the most likely winner of a speed laden four bend contest at 21:26. However, while making him the key selection I'd also want to include Wildfire Blossom, especially back in trap one, who is another that appears to have been overlooked by the layers and any 11.010/1 you can find should be taken.
Elsewhere, Bockos Alfie rates the most likely winner in a 400m contest (21:44) but is less effective from trap one than used to be the case. Likewise, Piemans Flash has his box (20:37) but has not been trapping and I'd worry about Courts Ad Jake from his favoured red box. Walk The Talk is well drawn (20:21) but faces an in-form rival in Chopchop Hope.
