"His clockwork display over this trip not only includes the joint best time for the distance this year but five other sub 16 second clockings and at 12/1 with Sportsbook he represents solid each-way value"
Come the big event come the big guns with Irish sprinting champion Ardnasool Jet a fascinating entry in a high-class renewal of what is, by virtue of it's Category One status, the most important two-bend competition of the entire year.
Fresh from retaining the Irish Sprint Cup at Dundalk earlier this month, the Cathal McGhee trained speedster flew round in a first look at the Owlerton track in a time just three spots outside the 280m track-record and looks certain to play a major role in the competition.
A draw outside National Sprint hero Calzaghe Flash in the fourth heat (20:13) will prove a real test especially after Ted Soppitt's charge clocked a rapid time in his first competitive race over the CD last week while well-drawn Bramble Milburn, although not known as a sprinter, made his own intentions clear when going round even faster, clocking the joint fastest time of the year for the trip on his local debut last month.
Sprint races rarely come up deeper than this but the Irish raider, a winner of 12 of his 17 starts to date can emerge on top and confirm his status as ante-post favourite with the Sportsbook.
Dylan flies the local flag
Those looking for a bigger price long range interest are directed towards Kirsty Grayson's Coolavanny Dylan, whose course specialist flies the flag for the home team. His clockwork display over this trip not only includes the other joint best time for the distance this year but five other sub 16 second clockings and at 12/1 with Sportsbook he represents solid each-way value in a four-place book. Drawn away from the major players in a very winnable third heat (19:57) from where any ante post stake money should be secured, he would surely be a much shorter price outright were he trained by a more recognised big name.
Nudge nudge don't forget Nidge
Fresh from adding a second Steel City Cup to his haul and confirming his obvious liking for this south Yorkshire circuit, Roxholme Nidge made his own Northern Sprint intentions known with a scintillating solo last week and although not known for his sprinting prowess can prove too hot for well-regarded Geelo Carlos in the second heat (19:42). Not that the latter, who represents the race sponsor's best chance of retaining his cash, should be under-estimated in another classy heat that also features surprise Trainers Championship sprint division winner Lost One Dare for Kevin Hutton, twice of a winner of this event in recent years.
Mummy Adele still has it
Queen Adele has whelped a litter since last strutting her stuff round Sheffield but has been drawn in a fifth heat (20:29) that affords her every chance of an immediate return to winning ways. Capable of very fast times over this trip early last year, including one trial calculated to be inside the clock, she should still have too many guns for her rivals despite an absence stretching back to last autumn.
