The greyhound world has experienced dramatic changes in terms of scheduling into 2018 with more daytime racing than ever. Darrell Williams delves into what it means and with the Golden Jacket on the horizon puts forward a greyhound that is worth keeping on side...
"Heroic Miss is an interesting runner in a Jacket trial stakes tonight (20:51) live on RPGTV tonight. With four wins from nine over trips between 670 and 695m the Jacket distance should hold no fears while a trap one draw (five wins from ten) looks sure to suit"
Betting on greyhound racing in the bookies has been a popular pastime since the shops first opened in the sixties but at the start of this year the schedules experienced their biggest overhaul in more than 50 years.
With two companies now providing live greyhound racing in the offices the number of daytime meetings has increased dramatically resulting in more opportunities than ever before for greyhound enthusiasts.
Four morning meetings, three more in the afternoons and a similar number in the evenings are now commonplace resulting in a race approximately every three minutes from 11am to 9.30pm with every race available to trade on Betfair.
Over the coming weeks we'll be looking at ways to help you improve your betting on the greyhounds.
For newcomers, reading a greyhound form card is not as daunting as it may first appear with a host of information aimed at pointing you in the right direction.
But where do I find those cards? Unfortunately there's not one website currently covering all the meetings but it is nevertheless relatively easy to find the cards you want. Search 'greyhound racecards' and you will see various options - some with more information than others. But if you're looking for the type of racecard you'd receive at the racetrack head for www.bagsracing.com and www.sis.tv/sis-greyhound-racecards.
Next time we'll pinpoint the key information on the racecard and how you can use it to your advantage.
Golden Jacket February's Highlight
The Golden Jacket is one of the most popular competitions of the year with the sharp contours of the Kent track providing a real test for even the classiest of Open race greyhounds. This year's event will be run on three consecutive Tuesday evenings with the first round on the 13th February and the final set for the 27th February.
Laurence Tuffin's Heroic Miss enjoyed a stellar finish to 2017 reaching the Eclipse semi-finals and often popping up at big prices. While her versatility has made her a player over both four and six bends it's over the longer trip that she is most likely to make further impact and she's an interesting runner in a Jacket trial stakes tonight (20:51 Crayford) live on RPGTV tonight.
With four wins from nine over trips between 670 and 695m the Jacket distance should hold no fears while a trap one draw (five wins from ten) looks sure to suit. While she has not been round Crayford before she has proved her ability to run a track first time previously and is worth an interest.
Also at Crayford, Mustang Swift appears to be finding her form after a three month break, just failing to get up in A2 grade last week. She showed excellent back straight pace in that race and looks one to play in similar company (22:02 Towcester)
