Just days into the New Year and the first major competition of 2019, the Coronation Cup, kicks off at Romford. Check out Darrell Williams' guide to the best bets.
"Wallis’ Shrewd Honcho has a similar profile to the one Brigadier Bullet had going into the Vase and catches the eye in heat two (19:17). A first round elimination in the Oaks she has since improved for the step up to tonight’s 575m trip"
Look no further than defending champion Shotgun Bullet for the best bet in this evening's Coronation Cup heats (20:21). Derek Knight's charge swept unbeaten through last year's renewal and boasts an excellent record at the Essex venue particularly when switching back there having performed elsewhere. A Champion Stakes finalist, having won his first-round heat, a feat he also repeated in the recent Essex Vase before elimination in a red-hot semi-final behind eventual winner Prime Time with whom he renews rivalry tonight. Phil Simmonds bitch was impressive in that final, however she may find it harder to dominate tonight against pacey Pink Osteria who will relish the switch back to a rails draw, all of which should further enhance the claims of the selection.
Brigadier to take charge
Brigadier Bullet an odds-on favourite in the Vase final enjoyed little luck in running on that occasion but had impressed in the qualifying rounds and is taken to bounce back to winning ways in heat five (20:06). The presence of Mark Wallis based kennelmate Saleen Ash who has bagged the stripes draw is of some concern as is classy Wuheida, although the former Oaks winner will need to be on her guard despite drawing red with Young Master on her outside.
Honcho a shrewd call?
Wallis' Shrewd Honcho has a similar profile to the one Brigadier Bullet had going into the Vase and catches the eye in heat two (19:17). A first round elimination in the Oaks she has since improved for the step up to tonight's 575m trip and is taken to account for another kennel companion Garryglass Champ while a small ante-post tickleat big odds is also suggested.
Boley looks big
Speed abounds in heat three (19:33) which should suit in-form Desperado Dan who unlike most of his rivals is not dependent on an early lead. However, while including him as a saver Miss Boley looks a shade over-priced having secured the inside berth and Phil Simmonds four-timer chasing bitch is fancied to grab early control which may prove good enough.
Cracks in Carina?
Barricane Carina has obvious claims in heat four (19:49) but her record from trap five including over this particular CD bears little comparison with when she is drawn stripes and at the odds, I'd rather take my chance with Maysthistlecrack who is more than capable of springing a minor upset for trainer Pam Dolby.
Tiger not for taming
Elsewhere Seaglass Tiger should be a good thing to win the Pups race (18:44) having accounted for virtually the same field comprehensively last week while perennial 400m winner Bubbly Joe looks another for odds-on hitters in the Standard final (20:53) even if Newlawn Adam cannot be totally dismissed.
Camps Star (18:27) is drawn to claim the opening Maiden while Down To The Felt may prove too good in the Maiden Stayers (21:08). Mayslucky Beggar would have big claims in the Maiden Marathon (21:26) if repeating last week's effort against previous winners.
