Greyhound of the Year Ice on Fire is a warm order to win the RPGTV Juvenile at Sheffield tonight - live on Sky 175 - and it's hard to see any other result. Darrell Williams pinpoints the best way to play the race and supporting contests...
"Understandably short odds about the favourite won’t appeal to everyone, but for those not perturbed by the price there’s unlikely to be a better odds-on poke all weekend"
The remarkable Ice On Fire, crowned 'top dog' of 2019 should comfortably take his unbeaten sequence to 11 with victory in the one-off Juvenile on his seasonal re-appearance tonight (21:18). The multiple Category One winner and ante post Derby favourite needs few favours but having firmly got to grips with the inside draw he has a good make-up with Waikiki Lad alongside who should allow him plenty of racing room.
Odds short chance strong
Understandably short odds about the favourite won't appeal to everyone, but for those not perturbed by the price there's unlikely to be a better odds-on poke all weekend. Make No Apologie has been kept busy over the winter contesting the Winter Derby final at Hove a fortnight ago and boasts an excellent record around this circuit with three wins from six over tonight's 500m distance. He is the logical choice to chase the favourite home and is suggested as the principal forecast play even if a sharp break is probably a necessity.
Why not include Waikiki?
However, I will also include another front-runner Waikiki Lad as a potential forecast link. Ted Soppitt's charge has adapted well to this track finishing runner-up in a competition just before Christmas on the back of a PB at Nottingham and is without doubt the greyhound whose price doesn't reflect his chance.
On the support card Antigua Romeo can win a potential 500m thriller (20:44) against long time absent Geelo Blissful, who may just need it in such a hot heat, and ex-Irish Deadly Expert, who made a big impact on his British debut last week.
Rip into Ripley
While Russanda Ripley should have the measure of Droopys Aussie, who nevertheless is worth including for forecast purposes, in the Seniors race (18:59). Sharpys Pluto can further enhance an excellent record at the track over six bends (21:54) provided he can avoid middle moving Cant Be Me early on.
At Monmore Pull The Trigger can make an immediate impact on his return in the sprint (21:47) where the trap one draw is clearly in his favour and is rated the best bet.
