After a few shock results on Thursday, the Greyhound Derby continues with another nine heats on Friday, all live on RPGTV. Darrell Williams is back with his best bets...
"Firmly fancied to yield dividends is to back Droopys Verve to beat King Kid in a straight forecast in the first heat (19:04) which should turn a probable [1.5] chance into something more akin to [3.0]"
After waxing lyrical about Bruisers Bullet in the ante post 'Four to follow' it's probably no great surprise that this column is strongly behind him for his first-round heat tonight (19:35). Having laid down the best possible marker with an emphatically impressive and exceptionally fast CD victory a fortnight ago, Mark Wallis' 2017 semi-finalist is firmly fancied to come out on top and should quickly gain a race winning position from what appears an excellent make-up. Well regarded Oi Oi Upenalty while respected has plenty to find on his trial form and the selection can be supported with confidence.
A win for Wilbury ?
Wallis should also be on the mark in the preceding contest (19:19) with Droopys Wilbury, a first round winner for Pat Buckley last year, but absent following an early Irish Derby exit last August until making a success debut for the champion handler in a graded race at the track last weekend. In hindsight he was let in lightly in contesting that A3 contest but if nothing else it confirmed the former Irish Juvenile Derby winner is making timely progress and he looks worthy of solid support. A double on both Wallis runners is also ripe for an investment.
Alfie and Freddie to name two more fancies
A Trainers Championship defeat aside Bockos Alfie has been in fine fettle of late and he holds strong claims in heat 18 (21:07) and has every chance of controlling the early pace while the remarkable Shaneboy Freddie can also gain the early initiative to kick off his third Derby campaign with a first round victory, just as he did last year, in heat 17 (20:36).
Trade up with the forecast option
Forecast options abound across all the Derby heats and more ambitious players might consider pairing Freddie with improving Irish raider Jaytee Taylor for the forecast - not forgetting a small saver on the reverse option, just in case.
Less original but firmly fancied to yield dividends is to back Droopys Verve to beat King Kid in a straight forecast in the first heat (19:04). Angela Harrison's charge clearly handled the orange jacket with aplomb when accounting for the same rival here three weeks ago and a repeat performance, which should turn a probable [1.5] chance into something more akin to [3.0] looks on the cards.
