Open Championship 2017: Make the Cut Markets

Dustin Johnson looks a big price to miss yet another cut this week
Dustin Johnson looks a big price to miss yet another cut this week

Steve Rawlings has looked at the Sportsbook Make/Miss cut markets and he fancies one or two big names to struggle at Royal Birkdale...

“The world number one looked unbeatable in early spring but since he fell down the stairs in his rented house at Augusta prior to the US Masters, when he was forced to withdraw, he’s not been the same and like McIlroy and Day, he too has missed his last two cuts.”

Given that six of the last seven Open Champions warmed up for the tournament by playing in the Scottish Open, I'm amazed how many of the big names have decided to skip last week's tournament at the Dundonald Links. The likes of Jon Rahm, Hideki Matsuyama, Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood played in the Irish Open two weeks ago, so they have some recent links experience to call upon, but those coming here cold could have made an error if history is anything to go by.

Rory McIlroy has played both the Irish and Scottish Open in the last fortnight in an attempt to find something ahead of this week but he's missed both cuts. Adjusting to his new clubs (after Nike ceased manufacturing), married life and recovering from a rib injury have all taken their toll on Rors in 2017. I expect him to improve again after some encouraging signs last Friday, and he does have a great Open record, but given how woefully he's been playing, he looks a reasonable price to miss out on weekend employment again at 11/4.

Jason Day's Open record reads 60-30-32-58-4-22 so he's never actually missed a cut before but it's not especially good and neither is his recent form. His second place finish at the Byron Nelson Championship is by some distance his best effort this year and since then he's finished 15th in the Memorial tournament and missed cuts at the US Open and the Travelers Championship. Day hasn't played anywhere since and he's extremely hard to fancy. The Sportsbook only go 11/5 about Day missing the cut but even that's tempting. I really don't fancy him at all but the one I really want to take on at the prices available is Dustin Johnson...

The world number one looked unbeatable in early spring but since he fell down the stairs in his rented house at Augusta prior to the US Masters, when he was forced to withdraw, he's not been the same and like McIlroy and Day, he too has missed his last two cuts. DJ is a great links player and his Open record reads MC-12-2-9-32-12-49-9, so he's only ever missed the cut once before, and that was on debut, but he's been so disappointing of late that he has to be backed to miss the cut at a juicy 9/2. Especially given we haven't seen him since he missed the cut when defending at the US Open a month ago.
