Golf Betting: This week's action whets the Punter's appetite

After a quiet week with no strong fancies, the Punter has a real taste for the betting at both the BMW PGA Championship and the Crowne Plaza Invitational. First, though, some questions.

Why is abbreviation such a long word?

Why is there only one Monopolies Commission?

How much deeper would the sea be if sponges didn't live there?

And why doesn't Tarzan have a beard?

All mildly amusing, thought provoking questions. But here's a real mindbender: why hasn't Ernie Els won the PGA at Wentworth yet?

It really is quite bizarre, considering his garden backs onto the 16th hole and given that he owns the World Matchplay staged there every September, winning it a record seven times. Could this be the year when he finally breaks his duck?

Until he secured the Honda Classic in March, tipping Els would have been classed as borderline insanity. Before that win, he'd blown a couple of really decent chances and looked washed up. But, he has now shown the World that he can still get his nose in front and has recently teamed up with Tiger's ex-coach Butch Harmon. So far, the relationship seems to be working well and it's hard to crab his tied 6th at Sawgrass last time out. It's a venue he's always struggled at and this year was his best performance ever at the Players Championship.

I started off trying to dismiss the Big Easy but I can't, I think he has a reasonable chance this week and [13.0] seems fair. In addition I've also backed a few others at much bigger prices.

Selections:

Ernie Els @ [13.0]
Jeev Milkha Singh @ [120.0]
Ignacio Garrido @ [250.0]
James Kingston @ [300.0]
Marc Warren @ [400.0]
(all to back in BMW PGA Championship Tournament winner market)

Last week's US event was one that I just couldn't find an angle in on and didn't have a strong fancy for but this week's tournament, the Crowne Plaza Invitational, is a very different kettle of fish. I have been struggling to reduce my really long list of fancies down to anything like a short list.

Last week, I turned my nose up at the price of Ben Crane at around [23.0] but he withdrew anyway, presumably suffering with his dodgy back again. This week, in common with last, he has some decent course form and yet I've been able to back him at [48.0].

Another player that was very well touted last week but I felt was just too short was Steve Flesch. The [70.0] I've taken about him this week appears a lot closer to the mark; especially given he's a former winner of the event.

I've also backed Stephen Ames; he's in great form and plays the course exceptionally well, a little short in price but I can't leave him out, I'm convinced he's going to bag a title soon.
I've also backed Texan Bart Bryant and another with very good course form in Tim Petrovic.

Selections:

Ben Crane @ [48.0]
Steve Flesch @ [70.0]
Stephen Ames @ [30.0]
Bart Bryant @ [70.0]
Tim Petrovic @ [130.0]
(all to back in Crowne Plaza Invit winner market)

I'll be posting an update on both events on Saturday morning. In the meantime, if you have any views or questions, please do use the comment tool below.
