A former seven time winner of the Farmers Insurance Open, Tiger Woods returns to the greens of Torrey Pines this week and there are reasons to be optimistic...
Tiger Woods will stand at the tee for the first time in over a year on the PGA Tour on Thursday, and the beach-fronted surroundings of Torrey Pines should offer a great deal of comfort to Woods given his outstanding record over the 36-hole facility.
He's tasted victory in this tournament on no less than seven occasions, triumphed in a US Open playoff on South Torrey and won the Junior World Championship here at the age of 15 - a lot can happen in 27 years.
Rewind to 2017 and we were reeling off the same stats, Tiger had completed 72 holes at the 2016 Hero World Challenge and while he didn't set the world alight, he went round the Bahamas course without too much trouble, to leave us dreaming of what he might be capable of putting together at the Farmers. He would go on to miss the cut and play just one more round of competitive golf that season before undergoing back surgery.
And so understandably even the most ardent Woods fans were reticent to get too enthused over his return at the Bahamas in December but it was clear from the moment that he teed off, this wasn't a man playing through pain and the swirling rumours about his driving being back on point were well-founded. He ended the weekend T9 on -8, a shot ahead of FedEx Champ Justin Thomas.
However the former World Number One will be under no illusions as to the task he faces this week. Torrey Pines is a completely different animal to the pitch and putt he faced last time out but then is there a man lining up this week that's better equipped to tame such a beast?
The Betfair Sportsbook go 22/1 (1/5 odds & 7 places) that Tiger can claim a historic eighth win in the Farmers Insurance Open while he's 8/13 to make the cut and 3/1 for a Top Ten Finish.
