Mexico Championship 2019: Form and course stats for this week's WGC event

The PGA Tour is off to Mexico for this week's World Golf Championship event at Chapultepec. Andy Swales supplies the stats ...

"Rory McIlroy continues to impress having opened his 2019 campaign with three successive top-five finishes, most recently at the weekend when he came up three strokes short of champion JB Holmes."

Border wall or no border wall, the PGA Tour's finest players have been allowed to enter Mexico legally to contest the first World Golf Championship event of 2019.

For a third straight year, the WGC Mexico Championship takes place at Chapultepec in the country's capital - around six miles west of the city centre.

As expected, the majority of the world's top 50 are taking part, including both former winners at the course - Dustin Johnson and defending champion Phil Mickelson.

Both players have already claimed titles during the early weeks of 2019, and are among a group of four golfers to have posted a brace of top-10 finishes at Chapultepec.

The other two are Tyrrell Hatton and Justin Thomas who will probably still feel aggrieved that he failed to win at Riviera on Sunday.

Of this quartet, it's hard to imagine that Dustin won't be among the challengers again this weekend.

Getting Closer

Rory McIlroy continues to impress having opened his 2019 campaign with three successive top-five finishes, most recently at the weekend when he came up three strokes short of champion JB Holmes.

Jon Rahm has posted five straight top-10s since the start of the year and the Spaniard stood on the podium in Mexico in 2017.

Good Current Form

There is no reason why the accuracy of Lee Westwood should not prosper at Chapultepec, although it's hard to see the 45-year-old lifting the trophy on Sunday afternoon.

Paul Casey and Tony Finau are two other potential each-way candidates while Hideki Matsuyama appears to be moving ever closer to a first PGA Tour title in more than 18 months.

Little Room For Error

With its tight, tree-lined fairways, Chapultepec will provide a stern test for those teeing-up in Thursday's opening round.

Water is not a major issue on this 91-year-old parkland course which has been a frequent venue for Mexico's national open.

Many of the tee shots will present a serious challenge, as accuracy takes on a greater importance than normal with regards to identifying the best angles to the flags.

Solid ball striking is essential at a venue where even the slightest mistake is likely to be gobbled up by one of Chapultepec's many wooded areas.

The putting surfaces are fast and undulating, while the ball will travel further than normal because Mexico City sits at an altitude of more than seven thousand feet.
