Andy Swales supplies course and current form stats for this week's Waste Management Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale...

"Hideki Matsuyama is chasing a third straight win in this event, having never finished lower than fourth in four previous attempts."

It's back to the desert for the PGA Tour, which travels around 360 miles inland for this week's Waste Management Phoenix Open.

From the cliff tops of San Diego, the players now head to Scottsdale in Arizona, for one of the best attended events on the calendar.

It is not unknown for this Arizona spectacular to attract more than half-a-million spectators throughout the week.

Last year's tournament set two new attendance records, with 655,434 passing through the gates for the entire event, as well as a single-day best of 204,906 on Saturday.

The Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale has been hosting this event since 1987.

Co-designed by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish, the course was given a $12m facelift following the completion of the 2014 event.

During this renovation, every bunker was either rebuilt or removed, while the greens were resurfaced, although fairways remained untouched.

Star-Studded

And the Phoenix Open can, once again, boast an excellent field with five of the world's top eight players taking part.

The world Nos 2, 3 and 4, Jon Rahm, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas respectively, all tee-up.

While Rahm and Spieth have decent past form at Scottsdale, Thomas has missed the cut in each of the past two years.

However, it is world No 5 Hideki Matsuyama who will probably start the tournament as the main focus of media attention.

Three-Peat Opportunity

The Japanese star is chasing a third straight win in this event, having never finished lower than fourth in four previous attempts.

Matsuyama tied-for-12th in San Diego on Sunday but is without a win since Firestone last August.

Course Specialists

Among the players with a strong course history are Webb Simpson and Brendan Steele.

Simpson remains one of the Tour's most consistent pros - grinding out plenty of top-25 finishes over the course of a season.

Yet, for this week's event, Steele might just be the man to follow each-way. For the past couple of Sundays, Steele has finished eight shots behind the champion and, with a good Scottsdale record behind him, might be ready to pounce in Arizona.

With so many big-name players in the field, Steele could be on offer at a decent price.

Daniel Berger is another who can combine good course form with solid current form - and the same can be said of Zach Johnson.

One final name to conjure with, regarding those outside the world's top 100, is Scott Piercy.

Two weeks ago in the deserts of southern California, the American tied-for-sixth at the CareerBuilder Challenge.

Although his recent visits to Arizona have not yielded great success, he has enjoyed a podium finish at TPC Scottsdale, albeit five years ago.
