Your major championship analysis for this week's 148th Open at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. Words and stats by Andy Swales...

"The first round will be crucial to his (Rory McIlroy) chances. Break 70 on day one and he’ll be the man to beat. During his career has finished 1st-2nd-3rd-4th-5th in The Open."

Twelve To Watch At Royal Portrush

Rory McIlroy: All the positive stats point to Rory, so it's easy to see why the 30-year-old is the favourite to win on the Country Antrim coast this weekend. He's in excellent current form - two wins during 2019 - and last week's low-key performance in Scotland may actually have helped his cause, so mentally should be fresh for his return to Northern Ireland. The first round will be crucial to his chances. Break 70 on day one and he'll be the man to beat. During his career has finished 1st-2nd-3rd-4th-5th in The Open.

Brooks Koepka: Although his Open form is weaker than in the other three majors, he has still posted a brace of top-10s from his last three visits to these isles. Remains the man for the big occasion. Last six majors read: 2nd-Won-2nd-1st-39th-1st

Dustin Johnson: Arrived early to prepare for The Open and enjoyed a practice round on Sunday with Irishman Graeme McDowell who knows practically everything there is to know about Royal Portrush. Runner-up at Sandwich eight years ago and will be desperate to play himself into contention ahead of Sunday - otherwise there's a nine-month wait until the next major comes along at Augusta.

Jon Rahm: Has prepared brilliantly for this week's attempt at securing a first major title. Has stood on the podium in each of his last three events, which include the US Open at Pebble Beach and, more recently, a second victory in the Irish Open. Links courses hold no fear for this burly Spaniard.

Jordan Spieth: Yet to recapture the form of a few years back but can't be ruled out on courses where a sound touch around the green is vital for saving pars and scoring low. Champion at Royal Birkdale in 2017 and tied-ninth when defending at Carnoustie 12 months ago.

Henrik Stenson: Remains one of the most consistent ball strikers in golf and his accuracy from tee-to-green rarely wavers. He averages 70.00 from his last 24 Open rounds - McIlroy is the only golfer shooting lower in this category.

Tiger Woods: Three-time Open champion who played well at Carnoustie last year when he briefly led during round four, before finishing tied-sixth. Hasn't teed-up competitively since the US Open, so may find it difficult to hit the ground running at Portrush.

Francesco Molinari: Defending champion who hasn't really recovered from his back nine disappointment at Augusta National, where he led with just seven holes remaining in April but finished tied-fifth.

Xander Schauffele: Is developing a reputation for playing well in the majors. He tied-second at Carnoustie, which was the first of three podium finishes in 'the big four' tournaments during the last 12 months.

Adam Scott: Has quietly made his way back up to No 17 in the World Ranking thanks to some solid performances during 2019. Had ended last year at No 41. Will tee-up on Thursday under the radar and desperate to make amends for Royal Lytham in 2012, when he threw away a healthy lead over the closing few holes.

Rafael Cabrera-Bello: Should really win more often than he does but is always an each-way possibility if playing well. Has warmed up for this week by finishing T-4th and T-9th in Ireland and Scotland respectively, both events staged on links.

Hideki Matsuyama: Playing solidly right now. Best finish in an Open is tied-sixth at Muirfield in 2013.
