The Northern Trust 2019: Form stats for this week's event at Liberty National in New Jersey

Andy Swales supplies the stats for the opening week of the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup Play-Offs ...

"For around 60% of those teeing-up in New Jersey, this will be their first competitive action at this course."

The Play-Offs are back but not as we know it. After 12 years as a four-tournament series, the restructured PGA Tour finale has now been reduced to three.

In short, the second event, featuring the top-100 players in the FedEx Cup standings, has been scrapped and instead of being staged over a five-week time-frame, the new-look Play-Offs have been condensed into three.

This week's opener, The Northern Trust in New Jersey, is limited to the leading 125 players in the standings - following the completion of the Wyndham Championship - although not every golfer will necessarily take up their invitation to compete.

From there, this total will be significantly reduced to 70 for the second play-off event, after which the top 30 head to Georgia for the season-ending Tour Championship.

And after a gap of six years, the PGA Tour returns to Liberty National Golf Club which hosted play-off events in both 2009 and 2013.

Unique Location

This stunning complex, which sits close to the banks of the Hudson River, is one of the most expensive golfing venues ever built, costing more than $250m.

Co-designed by Tom Kite and the late Robert Cupp, and with no expense spared, Liberty National has its own helistop, yacht services, spas and restaurants, and was constructed on a low-lying former landfill site.

It is situated within close proximity of Manhattan and just 2,000 yards from the Statue of Liberty.

Course Description

To create Liberty National, which hosted the Presidents Cup in 2017, more than six million cubic feet of soil had to be moved, while adding 70,000 truckloads of sand, as well as 5,000 trees.

The smallish greens are full of subtle undulations, while the course appears to combine both a parkland and links feel.

Opened in 2006, water comes into play on 12 holes and the winner of this week's event will need to be in possession of a deft touch around the greens.

Not Too Familiar

For around 60% of those teeing-up in New Jersey, this will be their first competitive action at this course.

Adam Scott is the only former winner at Liberty taking part, although there are a number of others who have played well here in the past.

The Wyndham Championship runner-up Webb Simpson has posted a brace of top-15 finishes at this week's unusual venue, where Justin Rose tied-for-second six years ago.

However, because of a limited course history, current form is probably a more reliable guide when attempting to select your bets ahead of Thursday's opening round.

Making Hay

There are few players as hot as Jon Rahm right now, with the Spaniard second only to Rory McIlroy for Most Top 10s posted during the 2018-19 PGA Tour season.

The burly 24-year-old will feel a little frustrated that his most recent official PGA Tour victory - if you discount the Zurich Classic two-man team event in April - came in January 2018, but he's certainly in good shape with the Play-Offs about to start.

Patrick Cantlay and Tommy Fleetwood, along with Simpson, lead the way in the Tour's Scrambling category this season, and the trio are also doing pretty well for Strokes Gained: Around The Green.

Two others to consider are Justin Thomas and Tony Finau who have shown signs recently of finding some better form following a mid-season dip.
