"With accuracy from the tee expected to be a prominent stat this week, Garcia and Arnaus are possible beneficiaries. Both golfers are inside the top-10 for Strokes Gained: Off The Tee, with Garcia teeing-up for the first time since he won in Amsterdam (September)."

The European Tour has travelled to the Spanish capital for this week's tournament at Madrid's famous Club de Campo.

Opened in 1956, the Black Course is a rolling, parkland layout which returns to the Tour rota for the first time in 11 years.

Tree-lined, and with small undulating greens, this will be the first time since 1996 that Spain's national open has been held here.

Strong Home Entry

Although Spain's leading half-dozen golfers are all taking part, the field is otherwise reasonably poor.

Just one member of the world's top 30 is attending, and fewer than 10 of the top 100.

World No 5 Jon Rahm is the highest-ranked pro teeing-up, with the 24-year-old desperate to improve on what, for him, was a rare off-week in Scotland where he missed the cut by five shots.

Another prominent Spaniard, Rafael Cabrera-Bello, also missed the cut in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, having tied-for-sixth at Wentworth the previous week.

Two home players who should find this week's venue to their liking are Sergio Garcia and world No 107 Adri Arnaus.

With accuracy from the tee expected to be a prominent stat this week, Garcia and Arnaus are possible beneficiaries.

Both golfers are inside the top-10 for Strokes Gained: Off The Tee, with Garcia teeing-up for the first time since he won in Amsterdam during September.

The 39-year-old Garcia is one of the few golfers in the field to have experienced Club de Campo competitively before (his most recent tournament here was 16 years ago) and he has a habit of performing well on home soil.

Arnaus, some 15 years younger than his compatriot, has made giant strides this season with three runner-up finishes on the European Tour - having won the Challenge Tour Grand Final in 2018.

Other Contenders

England's Callum Shinkwin arrives from Scotland's east coast where he posted his second straight top-10 finish.

The 26-year-old from Hertfordshire tied-fifth at the KLM Open last month, which was played over the tricky Ian Woosnam-designed International course.

Two-time Tour winner Andrea Pavan continues to impress with his overall high level of consistency, while Rikard Karlberg has shown promise since returning to competitive action following 18 months on the sidelines.

The 32-year-old Swede has recovered from serious illness and is starting to regain some sharpness, having made his comeback on the Challenge Tour during April.

This week's event appears to be fairly open because of a real shortage of quality among the competitors.

Focus On Accuracy

Due to its small putting surfaces, and tree-lined fairways, accuracy from tee-to-green will be of paramount importance.

You won't triumph over the Black Course by being a good putter alone.

Situated close to the city centre, Club de Campo is one of Spain's largest sporting complexes covering more than 200 hectares.

In addition to the Black Course, there is a Seve Ballesteros-designed Yellow Course, along with facilities for horse riding, hockey, tennis, swimming, squash, table tennis and figure-skating.

Around 30 years ago, Club de Campo was mooted as a possible venue for the 1997 Ryder Cup which was eventually awarded to Valderrama, situated some 400 miles south in the more rural setting of Andalucia.

Water, unless there is heavy rain, will not be an issue during this week's Spanish Open which tees-off on Thursday morning.
