"If the new course is as testing as it appears on face value, then Keven Chappell could be in line for another high finish – and may offer each-way potential."

PGA Tour golf returns to Avenel Farm for the first time in 11 years.

What used to be called TPC Avenel has now been re-named TPC Potomac, following a $20m renovation project.

The former course, which was opened in 1986 and became a long-term host of the Kemper Open, was not the most popular of venues among competitors.

Many pros felt it was badly designed, so the Tour enlisted the help of a number of well-known architects and players to correct the problems.

Those consulted included Tom Fazio, Pete Dye, Fred Funk and Davis Love, with the reconstructed course opening for business in April 2009.

Eight years later it is back on the schedule as the Quicken Loans National, with a layout that offers a mix of brand new holes and vastly altered original ones.

TPC Potomac is a picturesque woodland course in the north-east state of Maryland, and situated around 15 miles from the White House in Washington DC.

However, with it being 11 years since top-level tournament golf was staged at the site, and on a venue that has altered greatly, course form probably counts for very little.

In fact, only 15 members of this week's field played the Kemper Open in 2006.

On The Pace

Rickie Fowler, Justin Thomas and Patrick Reed are the headline acts in Maryland this week.

Fowler and Thomas have each enjoyed two top-10 finishes from their last three starts, while the slowly improving Reed was fifth in Connecticut on Sunday. All three showed up well at the recent US Open.

Bill Haas has posted three straight top-25s, while Danny Lee has been getting his act together in recent weeks.

And if the new course is as testing as it appears on face value, then Kevin Chappell could be in line for another high finish - and may offer each-way potential.

Old Course

For the record, and for what it's worth, the following players teeing-up on Thursday posted top-10 finishes over the old TPC Avenel layout between 2000 and 2006.

Alex Cejka tied-seventh in 2004; Greg Chalmers was a runner-up 17 years ago; Ben Crane was sixth in 2006, having previously enjoyed a top-25 at the course; JJ Henry was second in 2001; and Charles Howell was runner-up 13 years ago.

Meanwhile, Brian Gay has had a brace of top 20s, while Bryce Molder and Kevin Na have also tasted top-20 finishes over the old Avenel course.

The table below lists a player's form over the past 10 weeks:
