Open de France 2019: Course and current form stats for this week's event on the outskirts of Paris

French Open 2019 at Le Golf National
Le Golf National: Home of the French Open, and venue for last year's dramatic Ryder Cup

Andy Swales provides the stats for this week's European Tour event at Le Golf National, which is staging the French Open for a 27th time ....

"This week’s mediocre field presents Mike Lorenzo-Vera with an excellent chance of securing a maiden European Tour title on home soil. The Frenchman is a three-time runner-up on Tour and was third in this event two years ago."

A little over a year ago, 20 of the world's top-25 ranked pros rode into Paris to contest the 42nd Ryder Cup.

In one of the most exciting meetings of modern times, a strong European team conjured up an inspirational performance to repel a top-rate American side by a comfortable seven-point margin.

Fast forward 54 weeks and we're off to Le Golf National once again, with the stadium course staging the Amundi French Open for the 27th time.

However, all but one of those triumphant European players from 2018 has opted to give the tournament a miss, no doubt caught out by the autumn scheduling.

Of last year's 12 European heroes, only defending champion Alex Noren is teeing-up this Thursday, which is a huge shame for the organisers and sponsors of this historic event which dates back to 1906.

At least Europe's victorious skipper Thomas Bjorn is taking part, although the 49-year-old world No 677 is unlikely to contend for the title on Sunday.

New Autumn Slot

Since Le Golf National was first given the gig of hosting continental Europe's oldest open, the tournament has been staged sometime in May, June or first week of July.

But following this year's change of dates, the tournament appears to have lost out because of the European Tour's rich autumn schedule.

It has found itself caught in the middle of some prestigious tournaments. On the one side there were Rolex Series events at Wentworth and Rome, not to mention the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews, and on the other there are the forthcoming big-money end-of-season tournaments in China, Turkey, South Africa and Dubai.

There are also a handful of lucrative PGA Tour events in Asia, which have attracted a number of leading Europeans, so something had to give and it is the French Open which has suffered most.

Unfortunately, this week's event is devoid of players ranked inside the world's top 40.

Course Form

The biggest name teeing-up is Germany's Martin Kaymer, a former winner around this course where he has posted five other top-10s.

However, the two-time major champion, who has also won The Players Championship, is currently ranked outside the world's top 100 and has missed the cut in four of his last five starts.

Meanwhile, this week's mediocre field presents Mike Lorenzo-Vera with an excellent chance of securing a maiden European Tour title on home soil.

The Frenchman is a three-time runner-up on Tour and was third in this event two years ago.

English duo Andy Sullivan and Matthew Southgate have reasonable memories of Le Golf National, while Spain's Adrian Otaegui will hope to end a miserable recent run of results by returning to form at a course where his last two starts have yielded top-12 finishes.

Strong Current Form

Erik Van Rooyen goes into this week's event on the back of a solid season which has taken him to a career-high No 56 in the world.

The South African secured a maiden European Tour title in August, following a brace of runner-up finishes earlier in the year, and in his last eight events has only once finished outside the top 20.

In this year's wide open tournament, Joost Luiten, Matthias Schwab, Joakim Lagergren and Ross Fisher might just be worth a second look.

Schwab, in particular, is in good shape and his recent results includes a tie-for-fourth in Rome on Sunday when he closed with a 66.

Stadium Venue

Located around 15 miles south-west of Paris city centre, Le Golf National is a modern stadium course with plenty of water and sand, but few trees.

It opened for business in October 1990 and just eight months later hosted the French Open for the first time.

Water hazards of various descriptions come into play on 10 holes - and particularly on the back nine - while the fairways and greens are beautifully contoured.

The course has been selected to host the Olympic golf events of 2024.
