Andy Sullivan: Showing signs of a return to form

The Greg Norman-designed Al Mouj steps up to host this week's NBO Oman Open, having previously staged five Challenge Tour events. Check out our form stats, compiled by Andy Swales...

"Andy Sullivan appears to be heading in the right direction again, thanks to a brace of T-20s in his last two starts"

The European Tour returns to the Persian Gulf to stage a first-ever top flight tournament in Oman.

This week's stopover on the Arabian Peninsula will see the players contest the inaugural NBO Oman Open at Al Mouj.

However, this flat, coastal course is certainly no stranger to many of those teeing-up on Thursday.

With its large and undulating greens, Al Mouj has already hosted five Challenge Tour events during its short life.

Designed by Greg Norman, and opened in 2012, Al Mouj runs along a two-kilometre stretch of shoreline in the Gulf of Oman.

Water hazards come into play on 10 holes, while its bunker-dotted fairways are fairly generous in width.

This stunning, links-style course, where wind is often a major factor, is situated on Oman's northern coast and close to Muscat airport.

And it's not uncommon for planes to land within a few hundred yards of its 13th, 14th and 15th holes.

Top of his Game

This week's field is nowhere near the strongest to have amassed in this part of the world for a European Tour event, but at least it includes one of golf's in-form players.

Shubhankar Sharma tees-up having won two of his last five events, either side of New Year, and is now ranked 71 in the world, having been No 521 a little over three months ago.

Dutchman Joost Luiten will start as one of the favourites, but even he is without a top-10 finish since last October.

Another proven winner is Andy Sullivan whose form has taken a serious dip since he collected three Tour titles in 2015.

However, the Englishman appears to be heading in the right direction again, thanks to a brace of T-20s in his last two starts.

Four-time European Tour runner-up Jorge Campillo goes in search of his maiden title and, because of its mediocre field, this event provides the perfect opportunity for many aspiring pros to make that vital breakthrough into the winners' enclosure.

Al Mouj History

Among those to have posted top-10s around this course previously, are: Alexander Bjork and Matthieu Pavon.

Bjork has been knocking on the champions' door for the past year or more, and he tied-for-6th in Dubai three weeks ago. Pavon, meanwhile, finished 11th in Malaysia earlier this month.

And if anyone can be considered a course specialist then Jens Dantorp probably belongs in this category, having finished inside the top-10 on his last three visits, including a runner-up slot in 2016.

The following players have posted top-10 finishes at Al Mouj during Challenge Tour events (2013-17)
