Matt Fitzpatrick: A strong track record at Sheshan

Andy Swales provides course and current form stats ahead of the HSBC-sponsored tournament at Sheshan International in Shanghai...

"Rory McIlroy, who continues to post plenty of top 10s, is a little short on titles during the past 24 months. In six previous visits to Sheshan, the world No 5 from Northern Ireland has had five top-six finishes."

A typically strong field has assembled in China for this week's World Golf Championship event in Shanghai.

Sixteen of the world's top 25 are teeing-up at Sheshan International which is staging a top-tier tournament for the 13th time.

The HSBC Champions tournament was first held in 2005, and four years later became part of the prestigious WGC series of events.

Located around 10 miles west of Shanghai city centre, this 14-year-old tree-lined course has water coming into play on 11 holes.

Although the layout is reasonably flat, Sheshan's putting surfaces have a plethora of subtle slopes, and this week's competitors will also have to contend with an ample quantity of sand.

Something To Prove

Dustin Johnson will not be short of motivation when he competes in Shanghai.

The American lost his World No 1 status on Sunday when Brooks Koepka cruised to victory in Korea.

Not only will Johnson be keen to regain top spot in the Ranking, at some point in the near future, he will also be desperate to make up for last year's disappointment when he blew a six-shot lead with 18 holes to play.

His closing 77 allowed Justin Rose to claim a two-stroke victory at Sheshan.

Johnson, who won here in 2013, has arrived in China on the back of a three-week break following the Ryder Cup.

Another golfer teeing-up for the first time since Paris is Rory McIlroy who continues to post plenty of top 10s but is a little short on titles during the past 24 months.

In six previous visits, the world No 5 from Northern Ireland has had five top-six finishes.

Europe's major star from 2019, Francesco Molinari, is a former winner at Sheshan, while Paul Casey also has a strong history at the course

Outsiders

Although Matt Fitzpatrick is rarely viewed as an outsider in most European Tour events, he will tee-up on Thursday further down the pecking order than normal.

However, the Sheffield pro remains a strong contender for a top-five finish thanks to his good record at this venue, as well as his victory in Switzerland during September.

Denmark's Lucas Bjerregaard is on a run of five top-10s from six starts - which include his remarkable victory at St Andrews - while little-known American John Catlin is chasing a fourth victory in Asia since mid-May.

Rafa Cabrera Bello and Kyle Stanley hit plenty of fairways and greens, so should find Sheshan to their liking, and China's Hao Tong Li is back on home soil following successive top-10s in Europe.
