European Open 2019: Form guide for this week's European Tour event in Germany

Porsche European Open 2019, Green Eagle's North Course
There is no shortage of water at Green Eagle's North Course

We're heading to the outskirts of Hamburg where the North Course at Green Eagle stages the European Open for a third time. Andy Swales has all the stats for the event...

"Thomas Pieters, who returned to the winners' enclosure last month following an absence of three years, tied-12th in Switzerland on Sunday - just three strokes outside the five-man play-off. All four of his Tour wins have come in either August or September and on European soil too."

From the altitude of the Swiss Alps to the lowlands of northern Germany, the players travel to the outskirts of Hamburg for this week's Porsche European Open.

For a third successive year, the tournament takes place at Green Eagle Golf Club, situated approximately 15 miles south of Hamburg city centre.

Opened in 1997, Green Eagle has developed into one of Germany's leading golf resorts, with the European Open being played over the club's North Course.

Strong American Contingent

Despite a poor turn out among Europe's top-ranked pros, three leading Americans have travelled to Germany ahead of Thursday's opening round.

Xander Schauffele, Patrick Reed and Matt Kuchar, all ranked inside the world's top 20, are free to compete in Europe following an early conclusion to the PGA Tour season.

Reed, who is teeing-up at Green Eagle for a third straight year, has played well since mid-June.

He won the opening FedEx Cup Play-Off event in New Jersey, which followed a top-10 finish at Royal Portrush, and he should certainly be among the contenders on Sunday afternoon.

North Course debutant Kuchar is no stranger to playing outside of the United States, while world No 9 Schauffele tasted victory in China last autumn.

Another American in the field is two-time PGA Tour winner Troy Merritt, who is ranked just outside the top 100 and recently survived the opening two legs of the three-tournament FedEx Cup Play-Offs series.

He is suitably acclimatised to Central European Time having tied-for-35th at last week's event in Switzerland.

Euro Challenge

The only top-30 ranked European taking part is Paul Casey who tied-7th at Green Eagle 12 months ago.

Others who will feel they stand a chance include Thomas Pieters and Alexander Levy, along with fast-improving duo Matthias Schwab and Adri Arnaus.

Pieters, who returned to the winners' enclosure last month following an absence of three years, tied-12th in Switzerland on Sunday - just three strokes outside the five-man play-off.

All four of his Tour wins have come in either August or September and on European soil too.

As for Levy, he was runner-up over the North Course in 2017 and tied-fifth in Gothenburg two weeks ago.

Meanwhile Arnaus and Schwab, both aged 24, have made giant strides during the current season.

Spaniard Arnaus won the Grand Final on the Challenge Tour last November and, in his debut season on Europe's main tour, has already posted a hat-trick of runner-up finishes.

On Sunday he closed with a 64 in the Alps, to miss out on a play-off by a single shot.

Just one stroke behind Arnaus at the weekend was Austria's Schwab who collected a fourth top-10 finish from his most recent eight starts on the European Tour.

One other name to mention is Renato Paratore, the 22-year-old Italian who tied-second in Hamburg last year.

He may have struggled during the first half of 2019, but is showing signs of the form which earned him a maiden European Tour victory two years ago. Just might be worth an each-way punt.

Plenty Of Yardage To Cover

At more than 7,500 yards, the 11-year-old North Course is one of the longest layouts in professional golf and is spread out over 86 hectares.

And if you suffer from a fear of water hazards, don't bother teeing-up here as they come into play on all but one hole.

A traditional parkland venue, the North Course has large greenside bunkers and a good selection of dog-legs.

In addition to staging the European Open for the past two years, it also hosted a Challenge Tour event in 2010.
