Australian PGA Championship: Latest course and form guides ahead of Queensland tournament

No shortage of water at Royal Pines

"He (Jason Scrivener) stood on the podium in last month’s Nedbank Challenge at Sun City, and followed that with a top-10 finish at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai."

The final European Tour event of the decade takes place in Queensland this week, with the co-sanctioned Australian PGA Championship.

This will be the fifth time the tournament has been part of the European Tour schedule, although the event itself dates back to the early 1900s.

Prior to 2015, the PGA Championship was the preserve of the Australasian Tour, before joining forces with its European counterpart.

Royal Pines Resort on the Gold Coast will be hosting the tournament for a sixth successive year, with Queensland's Cameron Smith hoping to become only the second golfer to win the PGA title three times in a row.

The other player to do so was Scotland's Dan Soutar who won the first three instalments in 1905-06-07.

Headline Acts

The three poster boys for this week's tournament are Smith, Adam Scott and Cameron Champ.

Scott has occupied all three podium positions at Royal Pines since it began hosting this tournament and, together with Smith, was a member of the International team which was narrowly beaten by the United States in the Presidents Cup.

As for Champ, the big-hitting 24-year-old American has triumphed twice on the PGA Tour during the past 14 months.

However, beyond this trio, the field is sadly mediocre for one of Australian golf's most iconic titles.

The organisers were unable to attract any of the 21 overseas golfers who teed-up in last week's Presidents Cup which ended in Melbourne on Sunday.

Only 10 players are ranked inside the world's top 200, which reflect its closeness to the festive period as much as anything else.

In-Form Pros

That said, there are a number of golfers who will be appearing at this tourist destination in decent current shape.

Calum Hill has made a strong start to his professional career and is already a three-time winner on the Challenge Tour.

The young Scot will have been disappointed two weeks ago when he shared the lead thru 54 holes of the Mauritius Open, only to post a closing 74 to finish in a tie-for-17th.

But this result is unlikely to do any lasting damage to one of Europe's up-and-coming players.

One pro who probably should have won more, by now, is Jason Scrivener. The No. 149 ranked Aussie is developing into a reasonably consistent player.

His sole victory came in New South Wales just over two years ago but he is definitely a solid performer.

He stood on the podium in last month's Nedbank Challenge at Sun City, and followed that with a top-10 finish at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.

The 30-year-old may never become a major champion, but he is certainly capable of registering victories in events such as these on the European Tour.

Experienced Aussie Brad Kennedy, and the up-and-coming Mikumu Horikawa, will tee-it-up on the back of some strong recent results on the Japanese Tour.

And another home player, Josh Younger, is one of the few golfers in the field who competed last week, when a tie-for-third on the Asian Tour followed his play-off victory in the New South Wales Open on December 1st.

Sunshine Coast

The Royal Pines Resort is around 45 miles south of Queensland's state capital Brisbane.

Under the guidance of former Tour pro Graham Marsh, Royal Pines was given a major re-design during 2014 and 2015.

The tricky Bermuda grass greens are well-contoured, at a venue which is generally flat, but has water coming into play on 13 holes.

Laid out approximately three miles from the coast, Royal Pines can expect temperatures of around 75°F - which is the average for this time of year - although the prospect of rain is never too far away.
