Angel Cabrerra presents Phil Mickelson with the green jacket at Augusta
"Mickelson was composed throughout, played a stunning second shot on the 13th to set up another birdie and got better and better as his lead increased."
Emotional scenes after world number two produces magic to overtake Englishman in thrilling final day at Augusta.
Phil Mickelson was matched at [16.5] as he played a nerveless final round to land his third Masters title at Augusta.
The American's 67 under par saw him overtake Lee Westwood, who was matched at a low of [1.98], at the top of the leaderboard after the Englishman went into the final round one shot ahead. Mickelson finished the tournament 16 under, three shots ahead of Westwood.
It was a tense final day at the sun-soaked Georgia course but, as he pulled two shots clear with a birdie on the 12th hole, Mickelson showed that he could handle the heat. He was composed throughout, played a stunning second shot on the 13th to set up another birdie and got better and better as his lead increased. He finished with a birdie at the 18th before embracing his caddy in jubilation.
There were emotional scenes around the final green as Mickelson dedicated his fourth major title to his wife Amy, who was diagnosed with cancer last year. He held his wife and children in his arms in front of a rapturous crowd before going on to describe the win as, "one of the best things we've gone through."
For his part, Westwood will be disappointed with the outcome as he now holds the double-edged honour of having finished third, third and second in his last three majors; punters will wonder whether the Englishman is making progress or establishing a reputation as a nearly man.
Tiger Woods will have mixed feelings about his Masters too. The world number one never likes to lose, and there is no love lost between he and Mickelson, but he will be encouraged by his fourth place finish at 11 under in his first tournament for five months. The pre-tournament favourite traded at a low of [2.92].
In Betfair's Tiger specials market, he can now be backed at [32.0] to win all three remaining majors this season, [6.2] for a double and [2.56] for a solitary major win. The shortest price is the [1.89] available on Tiger ending the season empty handed.
Anthony Kim, who finished third, shot a stunning final round 65 to finish 12 under.
