Nick Faldo's tenure as European captain for the 2008 Ryder Cup will begin in earnest at the Seve Trophy, where his team from Great Britain and Ireland is likely to start as odds-on favourites to record a fourth straight victory in the event.
The competition will pit the best players in the British Isles and continental Europe against each other and, while Faldo will captain the home-based players, the betting is he will be keeping a close eye on all those in action in Ireland.
The event will be the only time that Faldo, and betting punters, will get a chance to cast an eye over possible future members of his team for Valhalla in 2008 in a team event.
And the odds are that the six-time Major winner will pick up a lot of useful pointers as he gets to know the players better during the four-day competition at The Heritage Golf and Country Club in Killenard.
Open champion Padraig Harrington, Luke Donald, Paul Casey, Justin Rose and Colin Montgomerie are all leading figures in the running to represent GB and Ireland, and they are likely to prove popular in the betting to finish top individual over the four days.
Harrington is the leading points scorer in the history of the event with 11.5 points from four outings - 1.5 ahead of teammate Lee Westwood - and appears likely to be trading at short odds to do well again.
Having won four of the five sessions two years ago, betting punters may feel Faldo's team are a decent bet at good odds to record a clean sweep this time around.
But those having a Seve Trophy bet will acknowledge that with the likes of Henrik Stenson, Sergio Garcia, Jose Maria Olazabal, Niclas Fasth and Miguel Angel Jimenez, the home side will face tough opponents and the Europeans will also have the advantage of being captained by Severiano Ballesteros.
Having helped design the 7,319-yard parkland course, Ballesteros will have valuable course knowledge to pass on while an array of stars could make his team an attractive betting proposition at a good price.
