A host of European players will be looking to retain their tour card at the fifth Mallorca Classic tournament in October, while betting punters' focus will be on who will pick up the title.
This European Tour event, which is held at the Pula Golf Club, takes place between October 25-28 and is the final tournament on the regular schedule before the tour championship Volvo Masters gets underway, always a big betting event, the following week.
The prize fund in 2007 is up to €2million and the Mallorca Classic is sure to provide plenty of opportunities for those seeking a bet, with the players desperate to secure a place in the top 116 on the Order of Merit.
Betting customers should take note that in the four previous Mallorca Classic events, Sweden's Niclas Fasth is the only non-Spanish player to win the event, so a bet on one of the home stars at decent odds may be a tempting prospect.
Miguel Angel Jimenez was the inaugural winner in 2003 and he was followed by fellow compatriots Sergio Garcia and Jose Maria Olazabal in the following two years, before Fasth broke the sequence last year. Five different Spanish players have won already on the Tour this season and they are likely to feature heavily in the betting on this event.
A number of players could go to Mallorca aiming for a victory to top the Order of Merit. The odds will no doubt point towards success for Ireland's Padraig Harrington, who currently leads the way following his Open Championship success, closely followed by England's Justin Rose and South Africa's Ernie Els.
Betting punters wanting to bet on Fasth emulating last year's tournament victory should take into account that the Swede lies in the Order of Merit top ten at this moment in time, and retaining the crown could push him further up the standings.
Punters eyeing a Spanish victory could be enticed by a bet on Open runner-up Garcia, while the likes of Jose Manuel Lara, Alejandro Canizares, Carlos Rodiles and Ignacio Garrido will all be looking to add their name to list of winners on home soil.
Betting customers may also consider that the event could be make-or-break for former winner Olazabal, the two-time Masters champion currently sits 115th in the Order of Merit table and a win might be vital for him to retain his tour card.
