WGC Cadillac Match Play 2-Ball Tips: Four plays for the opening day's matches

Marc Leishman: New found perspective?
Marc Leishman: New found perspective?

We have a new format for this year's WGC Match Play and that means a plethora of 2-ball matches for Dan Geraghty to sift through on day one in California. Can our man get off to a flying start with these four recommended wagers?

"Leishman shot an incredible second round 63 last week at his comeback event - the Zurich Classic - and finished 28th. With new found perspective, expect him to be a serious test for last weeks champion Justin Rose."

Marc Leishman has been through the mill of late to say the least. The Australian's wife is currently recovering from toxic shock syndrome, a condition that saw her put into a medically induced coma and given only a 5% chance of survival. As a result, Leishman didn't hit a golf ball for a month, missing a number of events, including the Masters. With his wife now, remarkably, on the mend, Leishman shot an incredible second round 63 last week at his comeback event - the Zurich Classic - and finished 28th. With new found perspective, expect him to be a serious test for last weeks champion Justin Rose, their prices look too far apart.

Charley Hoffman's 2015 record closely matches opponent Jason Day's, the pair sit side by side in the FedEx cup rankings (eighth and seventh respectively), but the disparity between their prices looks wrong. Sure, Day is the defending champion this week but Harding Park will offer up a different test to that of last year's tournament at Dove Mountain.

In 2013 when Shane Lowry was faced with an Irish opponent in the first round at the WGC Match Play he caused a huge shock in defeating one Rory McIlroy. The underdog looks to have a fine chance of repeating the trick in his all Irish match-up with an out-of-form Graeme McDowell this year.

Greens-in-regulation machine Billy Horschel is another to have defeated world number one McIlroy in the Match Play format. Horschel came out on top in a fiery clash when the pair met at the 2007 Walker Cup and his remarkably consistent game makes him a formidable opponent for likeable fellow American Brandt Snedeker.
