Tour Championship: A quartet of First Round Leader picks

Can Bill Haas put his FedEx Cup experience to good use?
Can Bill Haas put his FedEx Cup experience to good use?

All four of Dan Geraghty's FRL selections finished in the top 20 last week but no-one got close enough to land a first round return. Our man has his sights set on the season finale to make amends...

"Haas' 19th place (at the Tour Championship) was his best finish of the playoff series thus far and his final round 66 bodes well for this week"

A disastrous round one putting display stopped Bill Haas banking a return for the column last week but there was plenty of encouragement in his play at the BMW Championship. Haas' 19th place was his best finish of the playoff series thus far and his final round 66 bodes well for this week, in an event he famously won in 2011.

At the prices, Haas' round one playing partner Brooks Koepka is another I like here. Koepka briefly looked in danger of missing the Tour Championship due to a concerning downturn in form, however the likeable American arrested the slide with an excellent second round 65 last week and is more than capable of going toe to toe with Haas at the top of the leaderboard. Koepka's surprising Presidents Cup omission adds another dimension to the two-ball.

With just over two hours covering the tee times there's clearly little draw bias to consider, however, with some rain forecast later in the afternoon I'm inclined to look to the very early starters. First man on the course, Louis Oosthuizen, has at times looked back to his very best this year - and with two top 20s from his two playoff showings thus far - appears to be holding his form well. Back him to show up well on day one.

Danny Lee completes my first round team, the New Zealander has been a revelation this year, he sits 19th in the standings after registering his first PGA Tour win and a further six top 10s. His high ranking is all the more impressive when you consider he made the top 20 only four times in his first 20 starts of the season. He's missed just one cut in his last 10 outings, I think the former number one amateur is overpriced in this week's 29 man field.
