A star-studded field has been assembled at the WGC-HSBC Champions, which gets underway in the early hours of Thursday morning. Dan Geraghty previews three of the morning's first round 3-balls...
Rory McIlroy has comfortably the best stroke average around Sheshan International in his three-ball. As such, playing partners Jason Dufner and Luke Donald may have their work cut out keeping up with a rejuvenated "Wee Mac", who is fresh from defeating the world number one Tiger Woods in an 18 hole exhibition in Hainan Island on Monday, and has looked much more like his old self in recent events.
This week sees the rare opportunity to witness two players with a '1' next to their name playing in the same three-ball. Both Ryan Moore and Gonzalo Fernandez Castano won last time out on the PGA Tour and European Tour respectively. Moore was particularly impressive, shooting a first round 63 on his way to a 14 under total and the American's 2009 third placed finish at Sheshan was most impressive. Scott Piercy makes up the three-ball and brings with him no recent or indeed course form.
Paul Casey looks the man to beat in the 01:10 three-ball. The Englishman has a wonderful record at Sheshan and will see this week as an ideal opportunity to impress again and improve on his world ranking. Peter Uihlein registered yet another good finish last week but looked in pain at times and is carrying a leg injury. Kiradech Apibarnrat makes up the three-ball but his course form at Sheshan leaves a bit to be desired.
