WGC Bridgestone Invitational Tips: The best second round two-ball bets

Rory had his game ticking after a disastous start

Dan Geraghty gets stuck in to the second day of action at Firestone with five recommended bets from Friday's two-ball pairings

"I'm expecting Rory to carry on improving as the tournament progresses."

*2pts Back Rory McIlroy @ 1.654/6 vs Ryo Ishikawa

A slightly disappointing first day for the column, but I'm hoping to fare better having seen what the field have to offer on day one.

Nicolas Colsaerts and Danny Willett had contrasting starts to their rounds yesterday. While Willett stiffed his first approach to one foot, Colsaerts hacked his way to double bogey. That was as bad as the Belgian's round got and by the end he was one shot adrift of Willett who failed to live up to his fast start. I fancy Colsaerts to roar back with an improved second round and take the day two bragging rights.

As expected, Tom Lewis and Michael Hoey struggled in this lofty company; at least Lewis managed to make a couple of birdies. If he can keep the big numbers off the card, Hoey is there for the taking. I'll side with the young Englishman once more.

Jason Day struggled in the first round, finishing 12 shots worse than playing partner Jim Furyk. However, at the prices, I'm willing to give the talented Australian a chance to outscore his rival. It's unlikely we'll see another 63 from gentleman Jim, and Day is more than capable of a low round at a course he's fared well at before.

I don't mean to wish Lee Slattery any misfortune, he sounded a stand-up guy in his post-round interview, but, as with Furyk, Slattery is unlikely to go low again in round two and opponent Martin Laird has some tasty looking form at Firestone (top 20s in each of the past 2 years), back Laird to outscore the plucky Englishman.

I have no idea what happened to Rory McIlroy during the first four holes of his round, but he played much better for the final 14 and I'm expecting him to carry on improving as the tournament progresses. Ryo Ishikawa had a great chance to beat an out of sorts McIlroy on day one, but his chance may have gone.
