Sony Open 2015 Tips: A quartet of selections from the opening round 3-balls

The first full-field PGA Tour event of 2015 gets underway in Hawaii on Thursday, and that means a plethora of three-ball betting for our man Dan Geraghty to get his teeth stuck into...

Colt Knost finished last year's Web.com season with five top 15 finishes in his final six events. Knost has plenty of experience at Waialae CC, having teed it up here four times in the past with a best finish of 23rd in 2012 and the tight, windy course really suits the American's supremely accurate game. He looks overpriced as the outsider of his opening round three-ball with Brendon De Jonge and Andrew Svoboda, neither of whose form here is anything to write home about.

Both Jason Day and Harris English have Waielae CC form that has a progressive look to it; whereas English has registered top 10's in each of the last two years here, it's hard not to see Day making the faster start this week following his remarkable finish to last weeks Tournament of Champions (shot a final round 62). Both English and third member of the three-ball, K.J. Choi, struggled badly for form last year, failing to earn an invite to last week's event.

With a fine eighth place on his first appearance at last week's tournament of Champions, Robert Streb started 2015 where he left off last year. With that pipe opener under his belt, Streb looks a juicy price to outscore Angel Cabrera, who has been in terrible form of late, including when finishing 29th of 32 last week and favourite Hideki Matsuyama, who is clearly supremely talented but has missed three Sony Open cuts from three attempts.

In what's admittedly a tight, high class three-ball of former Sony Open winners, I like Zach Johnson's price and chances of coming out on top in round one (Jimmy Walker and Russell Henley oppose). This week's defending champion Walker may struggle after snatching defeat from the jaws of victory last week whilst Henley failed to match his 2013 debut performance here when he limped to 51st last year. 2009 winner Johnson was eighth here last year and seventh on his seasonal bow last week.
