Paul Lawrie Matchplay 2015: Four players to back on day one

Will John, the Wild Thing Daly, prosper on day one in Scotland?
Will John, the Wild Thing Daly, prosper on day one in Scotland?

A new event debuts on the European Tour this week, and it's a matchplay tournament meaning Dan Geraghty has mulled over 32 2-ball line-ups to come up with his four recommended wagers...

Tom Lewis had a fine links record in amateur golf that included winning the Boys Amateur Championship (stroke play followed by matchplay) in 2009. The Englishman then introduced himself to a wider audience when he became the first amateur to lead a Major after a round since Mike Reid in 1976 (A feat also achieved by Paul Dunne this year) when he led the Open after round one in 2011. Lewis has adapted slowly to life in the professional ranks, but his card looks secure this year and there are signs he's finding his feet; a return to matchplay on the Murcar links looks an ideal test, back him to beat Frenchman Julien Quesne in round one.

Both Peter Uihlein and Oliver Wilson have some excellent links form to their names, Uihlein shot 60 in the Alfred Dunhill in 2013 whilst Wilson caused a huge shock when finally winning his first European Tour title at 2014's Alfred Dunhill, beating Rory McIlory, among others, into second. However, I'm sorry to say that win has proved a false dawn and the Englishman has remarkably only broken 70 seven times in 62 attempts since. Back 2010 US Amateur champion Uihlein to triumph in round one on his way to what I hope will be a strong assault on the title.

Matchplay could prove to be the perfect format for links-loving wild thing John Daly; the American is still capable of heavy scoring, registering a 3.68 birdie average on the PGA Tour this season and hitting six birdies in the opening round at this year's Open Championship. Opponent Jorge Campillo is a consistent if not spectacular performer and has very limited links form, I think the bookmakers have the wrong favourite in this match up.

Much has been made of local lad Richie Ramsay's chances this week; Ramsay was fourth on this course in 2006 at the inaugural Scottish Hydro Challenge and has much to recommend him. However, fellow Scot Chris Doak was one place better off in third place that week and there are few golfers in the field with a better record in Scotland than tartan tour superstar 'Doaky'. Admittedly, the Scot has had his struggles this year but back on the Murcar links I'm happy to chance 2.56/4 about him beating Anthony Wall on day one.
