Farmers Insurance Open: The pick of the opening day 3-balls

Graham Delaet is fancied to win his 3-ball on Thursday

Dan Geraghty picks out his best bets from Thursday's 1st Round 3-Balls using Betfair's Sportsbook product, and our man can see big-hitting Graham DeLaet continuing on from his good form in 2013...

"Garrigus missed the cut at the Humana Challenge last week so preference is for Canadian DeLaet, who was particularly impressive in 2013, including when ninth here."

David Lynn was 34th here on his debut last year but he will do well to outscore big-hitting duo Robert Garrigus and Graham DeLaet on day one, even on the shorter north course. Garrigus missed the cut at the Humana Challenge last week so preference is for Canadian DeLaet, who was particularly impressive in 2013, including when ninth here.

Charley Hoffman played well last week at the Humana, registering a top 10 on his first start of 2014 and finds himself odds on for the 17:00 three ball. However, playing partner Cameron Tringale has beaten him on each of the last three renewals of the Farmers Insurance Open and looks a big price to do so again. Tringale's 15 under total was only good enough for 38th place last week, but he has a good record here, it might be closer than the odds suggest. Troy Matteson makes up the trio, the American has missed his last three cuts and indeed his last two cuts at the Farmers.

Although Victor Dubuisson is an undeniable talent, I wouldn't be rushing to back the former World number one amateur at odds on in his first ever PGA Tour three-ball this week, despite the weakness of the competition. I will chance Daniel Chopra at 11/4. The Swede has regained his PGA Tour card after a solid Web.com season and can put his experience in America to good use. Billy Mayfair completes the three-ball, the veteran missed 11 of 14 cuts last year.

Morgan Hoffman looks overpriced as the rag in his three-ball with Brian Stuard and Brendan Steele. Stuard has wonderful form this year, having remarkably finished second, fifth and sixth in his last three outings. However, the American suffered a dip in form after a fast start last year and is opposable at such a short price. Hoffman struggled at times during his first year on the PGA Tour, but registered four consecutive top 25 finishes in the summer and is clearly a big talent; he comfortably hits it furthest of the three-ball, which should be a factor on a monster south course.
