Mauritius Open 2017: Four outsiders to challenge on day one

Mauritius follows Hong Kong. It's a tough life on the European Tour! Dan Geraghty picks out four big priced fancies to challenge the day one lead...

"With four reachable par fives this week's course should suit Shin better than last week's tight Fanling track."

The forecast looks a decent one for us first round punters. The wind is due to pick up as the day goes on, and the temperature is set fair in the high 70's all day, giving those early starters every chance of posting the best day one scores. With half the field ruled out, onwards...

Ross McGowan is one of roughly a quarter of the field that has played this course competitively before. McGowan teed it up here in 2015 when he finished 67th. That experience should stand him in good stead, and the Englishman will be brimming with confidence having won his tour card back, when finishing 15th at final stage q school a couple of weeks ago. Still only 35, McGowan has had a remarkably topsy-turvy career that's been badly affected by injury. He still has time on his side.

I put up Micah Lauren Shin in this column last week and he finished round one in the places. The 20 year old American is in fantastic form right now. With four reachable par fives, this week's course should suit Shin better than last week's tight Fanling track. Like the majority of youngsters these days, the American hits the ball prestigious distances; he still looks overpriced.

I was delighted to see this week's each way pick Sam Horsfield given an early tee time. As a result, I'm all in on the youngster this week, outright and FRL.

Finally, given his strong showing at q school, it'd be rude not to include the third member of the Shin/Horsfield three-ball in this week's picks. Jacques Kruswsyijk took medallist honours at stage two and then finished second to Horsfield at final stage qualifying at Lumine Golf Club two weeks ago. The South African has performed well over the last couple of years and looks ready to make an impact at this level.
